Autumn 2018

A sunny summer and new vegan recipes were enjoyed by our many visitors over a very busy summer, including Mindfulness retreats. We also celebrated our 40th birthday in September, with the staff from Benthal Primary School who were here for INSET. The event also saw the Centre's history featured in an article in the Hackney Gazette. We would love to hear stories from anyone that came here years ago, particularly if you have old photos you can share with us at admin@kenchhilll.co.uk

The new Forest School area
Curriculum Matters
We created a Forest School area in the orchard, with a firebowl and bell tent, with help from Barney Clarke, formerly of Margaret McMillan Centre (Greenwich). Bushcraft activities and circus skills equipment add to our team-building options.  Local children really enjoyed making 'toffee apples', using our own fruit covered in brown sugar and cinnamon. Much tastier and more nutritious than marshmallows!
We are also raising funds to set up an archery area on the front lawn and provide training for staff.

Staff
We welcomed Kirsty Baker as our new trainee tutor this term. She has a background in biology and a keen interest in wildlife, having previously worked with RSPB and Essex Wildlife Trust.

Short Break Families Summer 2018
Country Adventure Short Breaks
May 31-June 2nd 2019 is our next Short Break for families of children with special needs. These popular subsidised holidays are open to all, appealing especially to those with ASD. We are approved by Hackney ARK, so registered families can use Individual Budget to cover the full cost, including carers and siblings. SENCOs and other agencies can refer families to us directly. Do encourage any families you know who could benefit.
Adult breaks
We hope to run a bird-watching holiday at Easter for adults. April 12-14th and/or 15-17th. Interested? Get in touch!

Pupils from High Halden Primary on a day visit
Fundraising

Enormous thanks to Co-Op members who raised over £5 000 in the Brookfield (Ashford) store for our Collect & Connect project, facilitating visits by local schools for day trips. Every pupil from Bethersden Primary school visited in September for 4 days of magical outdoor learning.

Since April 2018 Kench Hill Charity has been self-financing, operating as a non-profit organisation. We strongly believe in access for all, offering bursaries to children whose families cannot afford the cost of a residential educational trip. We need to raise £10 000 pa to support those who most benefit from our curriculum-linked activity programme. Just £50 enables a child to take part in an inspirational, life-changing week. Do you know any corporate team or business who could sponsor a child or their local school? In return we can offer team-building activities and use of the Centre for businesses. Please get in touch if you have any ideas of who we could approach!

This summer it hosted The Small Festival for the first time, a weekend of family-friendly creativity with drama, art, poetry and music workshops run by the participants www.thesmallfestival.org/
