From Steve....

Our attendance at the Malarkey Playwork Conference in Melbourne has proven to be successful in many ways: it confirmed just how important play is in the development of well adjusted children, it demonstrated to us that we are already doing great things and that we should probably be presenting rather than receiving, and that there are still some very exciting opportunities to further develop our provision of play.  As an added bonus, we had the opportunity to have some down time together and just enjoy each other’s company.  We are currently in the process of putting together everyone’s notes and thoughts so that we can spend time determining what, when and how we will enact some of the opportunities.

This week of course the Biggies have spent the week at Carlton River where amongst other things they have enjoyed surfing, rafting on the dam, Trangia cooking, obstacle courses and much more.  With the exception of snow, they just about copped every other type of weather, and credit to their resilience and good planning by Tom, they have coped admirably.

At the conference, one of the glaring insights for me was how other schools and organisations are able to communicate and promote themselves through the use of a well-organised Face Book.  I’m not a personal user but I do understand the power that this online platform has and how in essence it amplifies the most successful marketing tool that we have had so far; word of mouth.  So just to let you know, that quietly bubbling in the background has been some research on how Cottage School could bring itself further into the digital age with our own Face Book page.  Stay tuned.

Cottage School Strategic Plan

Committee has recently approved a new 5 year strategic plan for the school that will help guide our actions over the next 5 years.

You may remember a school survey late last year that asked which themes were important to you as a Cottage School family. The seven most popular themes were discussed in detail at a recent strategic planning session. The notes from this session were used to create the new strategic plan. (The seven themes became four as overlaps became obvious). The final part of the process is to allocate timeframes and people to the actions AND the good news is you don't have to be on committee to get involved!!

Committee would like to invite you to read the document which is available here. If you feel you could be of value to one or some of the actions listed, or if you have any questions, please speak with Steve or a committee member.

Thanks, George

Middlies 1/2:

This term the Middlies have been investigating Antarctica. As you can imagine this topic has vast opportunities for exploration and the children have been completely absorbed since the beginning of the focus. We have learnt alongside each other and it has been wonderful to see that many of the children have taken their interest home and brought in different information to share with us.

The Middlies have learnt that Hobart has important links to Antarctic research and expeditions both historically and in the present day. An early excursion to Mawson's Replica Hut on the waterfront allowed the children to gain insight into the living conditions of early Antarctic explorers. We have been learning about Douglas Mawson and it was excellent to learn more about his expedition and work in Antarctica while inside an exact replica of the first hut that was built in Antarctica during his 1911 expedition. This is a fantastic place and well worth a visit.

We currently have a colony of life sized Emperor Penguins displayed in the Middlies classroom. Please feel free to drop in and have a look at them. Like us, I'm sure you'll be blown away.
