Littlies - 'Home, Sweet Home'
Home is where my toothbrush is,
toasty, warm and merry! AMY
Term 3 sees the Littlies combining design and technology, social studies and material science to solve the architectural challenge of what does a building need to become a ‘home’. For the children, images of their home are the ultimate self-portrait. We have been working with the word itself, where ‘house’ is used as a verb, as it provides the fundamental needs of security, safety, health and happiness. ‘House’ therefore can be viewed as a form of garment or vessel that suits one’s life. Bellerive provides many opportunities for the children to venture out and glimpse homes from the past and compare these with modern domestic architecture. We have looked at homes from other cultures and geographies as well as modern examples of wild and amazing dwellings from international architects. Armed with a brief, the Littlies have been given the assignment to develop a design for a house on a vacant block on Fort Street, Bellerive. Their ‘Recipe for a house’ includes; 1 empty plot of land, a bucket full of ideas and an open chequebook! Final designs will be on display in the last week of term.
