Peter's Childhood In Kenya...

Against my better judgement and with a gun to my head, I have been asked to say a few words about my childhood. As the photos show I was lucky enough to have a father who was the warden of Nairobi National Park and we lived in the Park. It was a more remote location in the 50s and 60s than now, and when it rained my brothers and I hoped it was hard enough to wash away the roads and stop us going to school.

The photos below show our first lion cub (one of four over the years) named Prince who was part of the family for a year. It is fair to say that we had an assortment of different animals living with us from bush babies up to rhino. Some stole your heart away while others determined to seek revenge for ending up in the hands of humans and exacted a toll in bites and claw marks! They came from a  variety of places, mostly from people who misguidedly thought a wild animal would make a good pet, had been in conflict with farmers or urban life and in one case (a chimp called Sophie) as a refugee from the Congo.

In the end when my mother became ill, my father and older brother set up what has now become the Animal Orphanage still to be found at the Main Gate in to Nairobi National Park.

Not surprisingly, I have always had a love for wild places, wild animals, birds and cultures that appreciate them. Going back to Africa is always top of my agenda and I love finding new destinations, experiences and animals. Other lands have tempted me away such as Sri Lanka, Canada, USA and Australia but I keep on returning to Africa – it is where my heart lies.

The next best thing to going to Africa is sending people there and working at Experience Holidays fulfils this for me. So give me a call to discuss your bespoke, tailor made trip to Africa and to plan where, when and what would suit you.

Sri Lanka offers excellent value – and a private tour tailor made to your preferences provides you with the opportunity to focus on your interests and make the most of your time in this beautiful country. This is one example of how a holiday to Sri Lanka may take shape    –   but do bear in mind it is only one bespoke option of many.

The Sunshine Coast

Explore the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Western Canada. This relatively short stretch of coast, north of Vancouver is often overlooked, but with an intriguing coastline, tiny ferries and welcoming communities, it is a lovely alternative for accessing Vancouver Island.
