Freight Season Springing Forward

Dedicated trucking, followed by acquisitions, generated what little growth the largest truckload carriers in the United States enjoyed last year, according to the special report prepared by SJ Consulting for The Journal of Commerce. Dedicated contract carriage spurred growth as Penske Logistics, Ryder System, J.B. Hunt Transport Services, and other carriers. The largest US truckload carriers hope to do better in 2017, as truckload demand and truckload rates begin to creep higher. The Cass Truckload Linehaul Index, a measure of truckload pricing excluding fuel surcharges, in January declined at its lowest rate since its readings first turned negative last February, a sign pricing is moving forward and freight demand is strengthening.

Shipping Tip: It's all in the Details
Shipments are  transported to the carrier’s nearest hub where they are reweighed to make sure the class on the BOL matches their standards. If it doesn't, the shipments will get reclassed and the costs are typically greater than the quote given to the customer
Warming Reefer Trends
One reefer market in particular has stayed hot: Texas, home to three of the top five markets for reefer load posts last week. McAllen was No. 2 behind Atlanta and had some sizzling rate increases, including outbound to Atlanta, Elizabeth, N.J., and Chicago.
