Dear <<First Name>>,

We’ve made a lot of progress since the “Save the Ontario Rangers” campaign began just over a year ago.  Many more people, including most MPPs, are now aware of the benefits of the Ontario Ranger program thanks to all the former Rangers who have shared their stories.

We were proud to present the “Save the Ontario Rangers” petition at Queen’s Park in late October (thank you to MPP John Vanthof who presented the petition in legislature) with over 6500 signatures.  Collecting signatures gave many of us the opportunity to inform our friends, families and communities how we benefited from participation in the program, whether it was one year or 60 years ago!

We’ve had some great media coverage in newspapers large and small, including this fantastic article in the Toronto Star.  This has been picking up in recent weeks since our press conference about the petition on October 22.  Now, it’s important to keep this momentum going during this key decision-making period for the 2014 provincial budget. The annual cost of the program is extremely low at just $1.8 million/year - that's less than 1% of the $295 million that was allocated to the Youth Jobs Strategy in the 2013 budget!

We know that you believe in the Ontario Ranger program and you want to see it reinstated in time for the camps to re-open for summer 2014.  You may be wondering what you can do to help this dream become reality.  The single most important thing is to keep people talking about Ontario Rangers - through social media, traditional news stories and face-to-face.  The more people who are aware of the rewards that can be reaped from the Ontario Ranger program, the more they will continue to spread the word until the only sensible solution for the government is to reinstate the program.

  1. Call the key Liberal MPPs (see sidebar).  If they have lots of calls to their constituency office on the same issue, they have to react.  If you have a great story to tell, or you just aren’t a phone person, then send a personalized email to each of these MPPs asking them to reinstate funding for the program in the 2014 budget. Find contact details for all MPPs here.
  2. Write a letter (or even an article!) for your local newspaper.  This can have a big impact, especially in small communities or those where you can name several former, local Junior/Ontario Rangers. Click here to see a letter which was published recently, for inspiration!
  3. Approach your local town council and ask them to adopt our resolution. The resolution has been adopted by at least 4 municipalities so far: Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, Huntsville and Uxbridge. It has also been distributed to all municipalities in Ontario by the AMO. Bring it to the forefront at your next local township meeting! Visit this page to download the resolution document and get some tips.
  4. Email us and let us know what you are up to and if you’d like to become more involved in the campaign to save the Ontario Ranger program!
  5. Help us build our mailing list! Please contact us with names/emails of former rangers who you think would be interested in receiving future updates or ask them to Like our official Facebook page.
We’d like to extend a special thank you to Laurie Miller and the team at OPSEU, who have been very supportive and helped our campaign to stay on the right track.  Their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm has been wonderful.  As Laurie says, former Rangers are the most “can do” people she’s ever met - let’s prove her right by getting this program reinstated for 2014!

On behalf of the FORP,
Thank you!!

Alyson Richards & Lisa Streets
