From the desk of Paul Dewar, MP

Dear Toby,

For months, the Conservative government has been attacking public servants over sick days, claiming that public servants take more sick days than private sector employees. In response, I asked the Parliamentary Budget Office to fact-check those claims.

Yesterday, the PBO released their analysis. According to their independent study, the Conservatives were overstating the cost of sick days by 61% and the average number of sick days by 58%. You can read about it in this morning’s Citizen.

These attacks on the public service need to end!

Earlier this week, I joined with my Ottawa-Gatineau region NDP colleagues to call on the Federal Government to end its attack on public servants. In a letter to the government, we wrote:

“Federal public servants are the foundation of our public service. And yet, they are being asked to do more with less … They should not have to bear the brunt of the government’s race against the deficit. These constant attacks against public servants need to end immediately.

It’s time to stop telling Canadians that they should be happy with less. We deserve better.”

I hope the government listens and stops their attacks on public servants – but the odds of that are long. What we really need is a new government, one that respects public servants and works to make life better for all Canadian families. I am working across the Ottawa region to help elect more New Democrats and make that a reality.

If you can, please donate and help in that effort.

Thank you,
Paul Dewar
