Tell METRO

to fund safe streets for kids.

Last month Metro postponed the vote on how to allocate millions of dollars that could make streets safe for kids. They are voting on Thursday, May 19th. Take action Today!

The current proposal would dedicate $3.5 million over three years to Safe Routes to School education programs and street projects around schools that need it most. This is a great start and your support got us here. However, there are competing demands to take more funding for highway expansion, which just increases traffic and congestion. We want our kids’ safety to take priority. Tell Metro we need $5 million in dedicated funding for safe streets for kids.

Our region’s leaders will vote to allocate these funds on May 19th. Although this funding is one of the only sources of funding for our region that significantly invests in improvements for walking and biking, our kids’ safety is up against a hefty opponent: highway widening. Over the last year and half, our coalition and supporters have sent letters, emails, and made phone calls to all the elected officials sitting on JPACT. Our community has spoken, and we have all requested the same thing: dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School programs AND infrastructure.

We need your help to ensure dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School programming AND infrastructure. NOW is the time to give elected leaders serving on JPACT and Metro Councilors the following message:

In light of the $17.43 million dollar increase in available funding this cycle, we ask you to support the safety of our community  -- from our kids to our grandparents -- as they travel along and across roads throughout the region with:
  • A minimum of $1.5 million for SRTS programs as part of the Regional Travel Options program
  • At least $5 million in dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School infrastructure projects within the one-mile radius of schools, an important start toward the estimated $43 million dollar need
  • A minimum of $27.7 million for active transportation infrastructure that increases safety for people walking, bicycling, and accessing transit
  • Policy that supports equity and prioritizes Title 1 Schools

We urge you to vote no against any amendments that reduce funding for active transportation or reduce the $3.5 million proposed for Safe Routes to School programming, Safe Routes to School capital projects, and trails.

Subject: Please support dedicated funding for Safe Routes to School programming AND infrastructure

Body:

Dear JPACT members and Metro Councilors,

I support using transportation funding to make investments in Safe Routes to School to increase health, safety, and equity for our families. I stand with the For Every Kid Coalition and ask that you dedicate regional flexible funds for Safe Routes to School. Here is the full letter from the Coalition. I am committed to safer streets and healthy kids. Please support safe routes to school by dedicating funding for Safe Routes to School programs AND infrastructure.

In light of the $17.43 million dollar increase in available funding this cycle, we ask JPACT to support the safety of our community  -- from our kids to our grandparents -- as they travel along and across roads throughout the region with:

The Regional Flexible Funding that you will allocate on May 19th is one of the only sources of funding in the region that significantly invests in active transportation infrastructure and programming. These funds are one of the most important sources of needed funding for sidewalks and bike lanes. We need to see that dedication grow.

I look forward to your response on this important issue.

Thank you,
