May is Affordable Housing Month, which means there is a great lineup of events you won’t want to miss!
Affordable Housing Month is a time to come together with our friends and neighbors to highlight how affordable homes anchor people in our communities and learn about ongoing efforts to address our region’s housing challenges.
Urban Habitat is joining our allies, the Council of Community Housing Organizations (CCHO), East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO), and Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County (HLC), to celebrate affordable housing and the fight for creating more equitable, inclusive, and healthy communities.
EBHO’s Affordable Housing Month kick-off is on May 4, followed by the grand opening of affordable housing properties, including in Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, and Pittsburg. Workshop topics include how to build tiny home communities on faith institution land and empower residents through participation in managing affordable housing.
CCHO’s Affordable Housing Week kicks off with the Annual CCHO Party on May 6, at the African American Arts & Culture Complex in the Fillmore, followed by a Social Housing Symposium on May 7, and a week of events covering housing journalism, housing preservation, the Empty Homes Tax, and the grand opening of 2828 16th Street.
HLC’s Affordable Housing Week kick-off event is on May 6. You can also attend the grand opening of Arroyo Green in Redwood City on May 25, which provides 117 affordable units. HLC’s virtual and in-person sessions will focus on how to tackle the challenge of producing deeply affordable housing and mythbusting affordable housing costs.
