                  E-Newsletter May 2015

Thank you to all of our friends at Whole Foods Market (Robson) for a great fundraising dinner. Pollinator 2015 was a huge success and we already can't wait for the next one. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the delicious meal and a special thank you to Sheryl Yen at Whole Foods Market (Robson) for all that you did to make this event possible.

Since it’s humble beginnings as a one-time clothing sale in the lobby of Gordon Neighbourhood House, The Attic thrift store has become a special community space, and one of Vancouver favorite thrift stores. On May 20th, 2015 the Attic will celebrate its 20th anniversary in our neighbourhood. The Attic’s success would not have been possible without the countless hours of dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and many customers. Stay tuned for celebration plans in May!

A Great Year for the West End Senior Ambassadors

The last year has been an incredibly busy and successful one for the West End Senior Ambassadors. The Ambassadors are senior volunteers that provide connect with local seniors on issues relating to healthy aging and general wellness. This year they attended over 20 community events and held blood pressure clinics throughout the community. They were instrumental in supporting the purple ribbon campaign (raising awareness of elder abuse).

At each event, the Ambassadors used bicycle powered blenders to make healthy smoothies to distribute to over 1200 people this year. Thank you to Grace Hann and the dedicated volunteers who made this initiative the success that it was.

An update from the City of Vancouver on the West End Community Plan Implementation

Davie Village

The West End Community Plan provides direction to make strategic investments in Davie Village public spaces and to enhance the area’s distinct character as an LGBTQ hub. Key improvements identified for the “Heart” of Davie Village (Davie and Bute Streets) include decorative lighting, wider sidewalks, landscaping, public art, a mid-block pedestrian crossing and a permanent plaza. The plaza is also being explored as an option to commemorate Jim Deva’s life and legacy.

In late April we are holding two open houses to share preliminary concepts for the Heart of Davie Village public space improvements. This is your chance to review the proposals and let us know what you think. City staff and consultants will be on hand to answer questions and receive your feedback.

Saturday, April 25, 2015, 11 am – 2 pm
Heart of Davie Plaza,
Intersection of Davie and Bute Streets

Monday, April 27, 2015, 5 – 8 pm
St. Paul’s Anglican Church,
1130 Jervis Street

Stay tuned for more open houses for this project in May.

What would the West End be like if it were more rich with arts and culture opportunities and resources?

WE Arts is pleased to announce the second of three public consultation events for the development of the West End Art Plan. The West End Art Plan is a community document that will articulate a vision for the future of arts and culture in our neighbourhood. The second event will define priorities from the ideas generated at the first event.

All West End residents are encouraged to participate in this lively consultation process. The engagement of community members is crucial to the development of a dynamic art plan; the document will represent the shared visions of the community to support the development of facilities, programming, and events that will enrich our community and bring us closer together.

Final West End Art Plan Event: May 17th
