                E-Newsletter August 2016

Gordon Neighbourhood House evaluates the impact of our work together using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in June 2016:

We recently expanded the English Conversation Class and now offer it 3 times a week! In June 2016, we had 91 folks join us for it and 100% of the participants reported that the program has helped them meet new people.

Here’s what we’ve heard in response to the new LADIES NIGHT initiative:

“I have had things I have known reinforced. I see a psychiatrist regularly, but she agrees that the program is very beneficial to me as an augmentation to treatment.”

“Thank you very much for helping to facilitate programs like this one in the community. It has been integral in my recovery.”

71% of the women reported that as a result of attending Ladies’ Night, their emotional wellbeing and quality of life has improved, and they have learned new coping skills.

100% reported they have met someone new through the program, and 57% have since become involved in another program/initiative at Gordon Neighbourhood House.

One local senior, in her eighties and that has some mild cognitive issues, remarked that coming to the Community Lunch Program and having conversations was so important to her because of the welcoming connection and for the vital stimulation it provides.

A local senior that was recently widowed, commented that coming out to the Community Lunches and the Seniors’ Lounge have helped her feel connected to community and prevents her from becoming isolated.

Thank you to everyone that takes the time to share your thoughts and feelings about the impact of Gordon Neighbourhood House with us!

Workshop and Cast Call for šxʷʔamət (home)

Theatre for Living and Journeys Around the Circle, with support from the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre, are looking to recruit workshop and cast members for the 2017 production šxʷʔamət (home) – no acting experience is required.

The premise of the project is, after all the proclamations, policies, and declarations – what does the reality of Reconciliation look like, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, on the ground, day to day?  What does it feel like? How do we ensure it is honourable and not a further process of assimilation?

…these are some of the questions we hope to investigate in šxʷʔamət (home), which will be created and performed by an Indigenous / non-Indigenous workshop group and cast.  All workshop and cast participants are paid a living wage.

Please follow this link to find out how to apply
