We evaluate the impact of our work using a variety of methods. Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in February 2016:

The Clean Team, a partnership of Gordon Neighbourhood House and the West End Business Improvement Association, works on Denman, Davie and Robson streets performing general street cleaning. They spent 96 hours on the streets and received 53 thank-you’s.
We had 353 visits to Creative Playtime, where 100% of the parents/caregivers felt that Creative Playtime supported their child's social and educational skill development and general school readiness.
Young Ideas hosted 7 events/activities, 100% of the guests to these events stated that they met someone new through their participation in one or more of the Young Ideas events/initiatives.

Volunteer Spotlight: Boun

Volunteers are absolutely integral to our work, and they make our programs and initiatives possible.
Boun is a volunteer who has been helping prepare food for GNH’s West End Family Night over the past few years, and began volunteering at the Attic Thrift Store on Davie when it opened in January, 2016. He was motived to volunteer because he sees “GNH as a place of neighbours helping out neighbours.”
We asked him which part of his volunteer role at the Attic he enjoys most, and he told us that one example was “helping our new volunteers out and seeing them shine. We are so lucky to have such great volunteers helping out at both locations.”
Boun shared one memorable moment from his volunteer experiences:
“I would say that would be helping out the Syrian refugees that visit the Attic on Davie, as my family too were refugees to Canada when I was ten years old. When the war broke out in Laos and we had to escape to Thailand and had to live in two refugee camps in two years. I understand what they are going through; like most of them, we did not speak English when we came to Canada.”
Thank you to Boun for all that you contribute to your community.

Ready Set Learn

Together Gordon Neighbourhood House, Lord Roberts School, Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres, West End Community Centre, Three Bridges Community Health Centre, Vancouver Public Library, and the YMCA  came together to host our Ready Set Learn on March 9, 2016.
There were  over 150 people in attendance and it was a great opportunity for parents to learn about preparing children for kindergarten, gathering information about community resources and some great entertainment.

A special thank you to all the wonderful Lord Roberts student volunteers for helping out with Ready Set Learn.

Celebrate Vancouver's First Tree Week

The Vancouver Park Board presents Vancouver's first ever Tree Week on April 2 to 10, 2016. To celebrate, the Park Board is now selling more than 3,000 fruit, flowering and shade trees for only $10 each (Vancouver residents only)! Over a dozen tree-themed events, talks and walks will be happening throughout the week.
Vancouver Tree Week supports our urban forest goal of planting 150,000 new trees in Vancouver by 2020 --- we still have almost 100,000 to plant in the next four years! Please help Vancouver meet those goals by coming out to Tree Week events, planting trees in your yard, and encouraging your neighbours to do the same.
As you know, healthy trees are essential to a healthy eco-system and provide all of us with clean air, shade and cooling for our homes and streets.
Reserve your $10 tree now, try the Treelationship quiz to find the perfect tree for you and your yard, and check out other Vancouver Tree Week events: Don't forget to share your "treelationship" on social media with the hash tag #VanTreeWeek!
