                  E-Newsletter June 2015

At Gordon Neighbourhood House we evaluate the impact of our work together using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had last month:

51 people enjoyed access to more affordable organic produce on a bi-weekly basis as a result of their participation in the Organic Bulk Buying Club.

Young Ideas hosted a wine and painting night, “Vino, Vibes, and Van Gogh”.
95% of the attendees reported that they met someone new at the event.

100% of parents/caregivers that attended West End Family Night expressed that it provided a positive, safe and inclusive community space for families. In addition, 100% of attendees also felt that West End Family Night at Gordon Neighbourhood House provided opportunities to connect with neighbours and exchange knowledge of community resources.

In our West End Urban farms, we produced over 25 pounds of produce for this month's Community Lunches, the Pop-up Produce stand and salad bags ($0.25 each).

As a result of the West End Clean Up over 60 bags of litter were removed from West End streets.

Congratulations to our friends at Vancity Credit Union (Branch #47) and our dedicated volunteer Nathan Saade on your Good Neighbour Awards.

We appreciate all that you do!

On May 20th, 2015, The Attic thrift store celebrated it’s 20th year of operation on the second floor of Gordon Neighbourhood House! What originated as a clothing swap in the lobby of GNH, over the years has become one of Vancouver’s favourite thrift stores.

With a delicious carrot cake donated by Whole Foods Market to mark the milestone, the event was a great opportunity to celebrate and share stories about 20 years of found treasures, and the friendships made along the way. Thank you to our amazing volunteers, donors, and customers for 20 years of ongoing support. #togetherwegrow

Vino, Vibes, and Van Gogh

On a beautiful evening in May, Gordon Neighbourhood House was host to a night of painting, music and wine. The event, dubbed ‘Vino, Vibes, and Van Gogh’ was organized by The Young Ideas group, which aims to connect people who either live, work or volunteer in the West End, particularly those between the ages of 20-39.

Future summer events include: Games in the Park, Cinema in the Park, and Let’s Grow: Lunch n’ Learn, where participants will learn how to grow micro-greens/sprouts indoors. It sure to be a fun summer!

Neighbourhood Small Grants and Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants

With the generous support of the Vancouver Foundation and the City of Vancouver, Gordon Neighbourhood House is coordinating yet another grant cycle of the Neighbourhood Small Grants (NSG) and Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants program. With a small grant, residents are able to complete projects that bring people together and make their community more vibrant and resilient. This year we awarded $50,000 in funding to nearly 100 projects including: community gardens, bee hives, BBQing workshops, picnics, art walks, and many more. Stay tuned for project updates on our GNH Facebook Page.

West End Clean Up

West End Community Plan Implementation

From the Implementation Newsletter

Heart of Davie Village Public Space Improvements

In April, we hosted two open houses inviting you to help us create a plaza that’s an inviting, dynamic space, which celebrates Davie Village and the local LGBTQ community.  Based on the feedback we received from the open houses, questionnaire and additional stakeholder consultation, City staff and consultants have refined a design concept for the plaza and adjacent public spaces.

Drop by an open house to let us know what you think of the concept. City staff and consultants will be on hand to answer questions and receive your feedback.

The Book Buddy Program Arrives
in the West End

Book Buddy volunteers read with Kindergarten to Grade Two students.  Reading is one-to-one and requires being at the school from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. one day a week.
This is a fun position for reliable volunteers who would like to go back to school!  Like our community, the school is a multicultural setting full of good-will, energy and excitement.
The Book Buddy Program began at Tillicum Annex three years ago and now is established at MacDonald Elementary.  Last year we began the Program at Lord Roberts Annex in the West End.
Volunteers must complete an interview, criminal record check, and orientation.
For further information leave a message at Lord Roberts Annex (604) 713-5495  and a Book Buddy will get back to you.

West End Neighbourhood Food Network: Changes in Foods Scraps Drop Spots services in 2015, ending and starting

Please note that these three Drop Spots in the West End will END as follows:

  • Gordon Neighbourhood House: Saturday, May 23
  • Gordon Neighbourhood House: Tuesday, May 26
  • West End Community Centre: Saturday, June 27

Another Drop Spot sponsored by the Farmers Market will START as follows:

  • West End Farmer’s Market (Comox and Bute): Saturdays, May 30 (9 am – 2 pm)

On January 1, the City of Vancouver and Metro Vancouver banned the disposal of food as garbage. Under the City’s by-law, property owners are required to develop a plan and to manage food scraps according to that plan. If your building manager or owner is reluctant to implement a food scraps plan, please call the City at 604-871-6443. City staff may be able to assist by explaining to your building manager/owner directly about the organics ban and change in bylaw requirements, and hopefully get them moving to implement a food scraps plan.

Thank you! Thousands of people have made it part of their routine to recycle food scraps since 2011! You have been champions and leaders. Together, our efforts have been successful in recycling thousands of tons. WENFN offers many other activities relating to food in the West End. Upcoming “Community Food Potluck” on June 14 (Sunday 1–2:30 pm). Visit our website for more info and to get involved.
