At Gordon Neighbourhood House we evaluate the impact of our work together using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in August 2015:

“This place was so helpful when there was a power outage. I live around the corner and charged my computer and iPhone twice in the 36 hours that my building was without electricity. Thank you!”
                                                                                              - West End Resident
In August, we harvested 58 pounds of produce from our urban farms for our various community food initiatives. We harvested lettuce, yellow beans, beets, kale, carrots, zucchini, buttercup squash, cucumber, radish, heirloom tomatoes, yellow cherry tomatoes and a wide variety of herbs.

The Clean Team, a initiative animated as a partnership between Gordon Neighbourhood House and the West End Business Improvement Association, spent 104 hours on West End streets collecting 44 bags of litter.

100% of parents/caregivers whose children attended GNH’s Summer Camp indicated that they were extremely satisfied with the quality of the program and were very pleased with the variety of educational activities that their children got to experience around the Lower Mainland.

Eat Think Vote Vancouver

Food Secure Canada's Eat Think Vote Campaign calls for the creation of a national food policy for Canada. On Sept. 22, Eat Think Vote Vancouver was held at Gordon Neighbourhood House. Local candidates in the upcoming federal election, Dr. Hedy Fry (Liberal), Constance Barnes (NDP), and Lisa Barrett (Green) joined us to discuss their party's platform and key elements of a national food policy. Thank you to all who attended and provided insightful questions to the candidates and thank you to the candidates themselves for your responses.

Thank you to our committed partners: Vancouver Food Policy Council, Vancouver Urban Farming Society, Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Networks, and the BC Food Systems Network for making the event a huge success!

We're thrilled to report that Goodness: Recipes & Stories is at the printer and will soon be on sale. Both an interview with Gordon Neighbourhood House's Executive Director, Paul Taylor and recipes from Chef Peter Nguyen will be featured in the soon to be released cookbook.

Goodness: Recipes & Stories celebrates 37 good food fighters from across Canada—chefs, entrepreneurs, growers, and food activists who believe that good, healthy food should be accessible to all. Each of their stories underlines the simple truth: food has the power to enrich lives and build strong communities. From supporting sustainability to championing access, outreach, and education, these individuals serve up tablefuls of goodness every day—and in this cookbook they serve up some of their favourite recipes, too.

Well-known chefs such as Lora Kirk, Brad Long, Jamie Kennedy, and Vikram Vij, entrepreneurs such as Elana Rosenfeld from Kicking Horse Coffee and Mike Fata from Manitoba Hemp Harvest, food activists such as Nick Saul, Lil MacPherson, and Sarah Harmer, community food centre champions such as Kim Fox and Paul Taylor, and growers such as Gillian Flies of The New Farm and Michael Abelman of Fields of Plenty explain why good food matters and what community means to them as well as share personal recipes that are perfect for enjoying with family and friends.

Gordon Neighbourhood House is honoured to be 1 of 5 organizations across the country to receive a Good Food Grant from Community Food Centres of Canada.

The Book Buddy Program Arrives in
the West End

Book Buddy volunteers read with Kindergarten to Grade Two students.  Reading is one-to-one and requires being at the school from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. one day a week.
This is a fun position for reliable volunteers who would like to go back to school!  Like our community, the school is a multicultural setting full of good-will, energy and excitement.
The Book Buddy Program began at Tillicum Annex three years ago and now is established at MacDonald Elementary.  Last year we began the Program at Lord Roberts Annex in the West End.
Volunteers must complete an interview, criminal record check, and orientation.
For further information leave a message at Lord Roberts Annex (604) 713-5495 and a Book Buddy will get back to you.
