E-newsletter March 2017

Gordon Neighbourhood House evaluates the impact of our work together using a variety of methods. Here is a snap shot of some of the fun we had in January 2016:

Young Ideas hosted 2 events and 5 classes:

90% of attendees reported feeling an increased sense of community belonging

100% of attendees reported meeting someone new

Gordon Neighbourhood House has two Attic Thrift Stores (1340 Davie Street and 1019 Broughton Street). The Attic Thrift Store team consists of 50 dedicated volunteers

77% of people that shop at the Attic Thrift Stores reported that shopping at the stores saves them money.

81% of our customers reported that they met someone new at the store.

73% of our customers know an Attic Thrift Store volunteer by their first name.

"The Attic and Gordon Neighbourhood House are anchors in the community that bring good people together and provide an amazing environment for love of community, and people to grow. Thank you Gordon House. Thank you Attic."

“The Attic has volunteers that are some of the finest, most generously spirited people I have met in my 15 years living in Vancouver”

“I can buy cheap items at the Attic [which] helps me save money to buy food”

Congratulations to Joy Gyamfi

On February 1, 2016 our amazing colleague Joy Gyamfi was recognized as an outstanding young black leader in Vancouver at the Mayor’s Black History Month Proclamation event. Joy is the Program Assistant in GNH’s Young Ideas initiative. We’re so lucky to have such an awesome colleague.

Welcome Joey!

We are happy to welcome Joey Liu, our new Farmer and Community Programmer to Gordon Neighbourhood House.
Joey is excited to get her hands dirty this year, and she can't think of anything better than growing fresh veggies to nourish the Gordon Neighbourhood House family. She loves connecting people to food, and helping to spark the 'A-ha!' moment when they pull a home-grown carrot out of the soil, or learn something really cool about nature.

Joey has been involved with The Food Connection, Mount Pleasant Food Network, The World In A Garden, Environmental Youth Alliance and Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC). She has a Horticultural Therapy Certificate and firmly believes & practices in the therapeutic power of plants and nature. Outside of food, one of her biggest loves is singing in her community choir.

Welcome to the Farm-ly!
Calling all food-lovers and green thumbs! The GNH Urban Farm Program is starting up, and we're looking for folks to help with our 4 urban farm sites, including our new rooftop garden.

The food we grow will be harvested for our GNH community lunches and low-cost produce market. All levels of experience are welcome, just bring your willingness to learn and collaborate on a team. Contact Joey at or call 604-683-2554 to learn more.

Banana Trolley

Once a month we hit the streets to armed with organic fair trade bananas as we connect with the community to share news about programs, events or just to introduce ourselves. The fair trade organic bananas are generously donated by our friends at Whole Foods Market (Robson).

Look out for us on a West End street near you!

Nourish Bowl Wednesdays Starting Soon

What is a Nourish Bowl?

A Nourish bowl is a delicious hot meal in a bowl, typically with a layer of cooked grains on the bottom (like brown rice), a mix of cooked and raw seasonal vegetables, some protein (such as tofu, chickpeas or meat), and to top if off, a mouthwatering savoury sauce. Join us at 12:30pm on Wednesdays starting soon.

Every week our kitchen team volunteers Collaborate with Joey (GNH's Farmer) to make a seasonal Nourish Bowls. We will switch up ingredients depending on what's in season and what people enjoy.

Want to help out with cooking, learn from Joey, and meet others in the community? Email us

Have you Had our Organic Fair Trade Coffee?

With a contribution from Ethical Bean we’re able to make organic fair trade coffee available at no cost to folks at the neighbourhood house.

A huge thanks to our friends at Ethical Bean for their support!

Sole Food Street Farms

“Put your passion for food and community to better use. Do you thrive in a role that is equal parts ‘matchmaker’ and ‘traffic director.’ Love getting your hands dirty? Building strong community bonds is like second nature to you? If your sense of purpose is matched only by your sense of humour then you might be the person we're looking for.”

Sole Food Street Farms is looking for a Distribution Coordinator for our 2017 season. Please forward this posting to anyone you think might be interested. Deadline for applications is February 28, 2017

LifeRing Secular Recovery

LifeRing Secular Recovery is a 100% peer driven support group for all those in recovery from substance use disorders (more commonly called addictions.) We provide a safe, friendly non-judgemental atmosphere where participants are able to openly and frankly discuss their individual journeys in recovery. We believe that there is no template or recipe for recovery and that people must be free to discover what works for them by sharing and listening to others. Everyone's journey is
unique but to find your way and your tools it is important to connect and to share with others on their own journey. LifeRing meetings provide this environment for many people.

We practice secularity which means that in our opinion religion and all forms of spirituality are individual choices and may or may not play a role in an individuals recovery. We bring together people on the basis of what we all have in common which is recovery from substance misuse.

All are welcome at our meetings.
