                E-Newsletter January 2016

At Gordon Neighbourhood House we evaluate the impact of our work together using a variety of methods. Here is a snap shot of some of the fun we had in November 2015:

“I was so isolated with my experience of becoming a single parent. This group helped me have hope again that I can make it through. Without family or close friends, the group is my adult time to be myself and be loved.”
- Single Mothers’ Support Group member

100% of the Single Mothers’ Support Group members indicated that the group provides a safe and positive environment. The Single Mothers’ Support Group is a partnership between YWCA and Gordon Neighbourhood House.
100% of GNH's computer class participants surveyed said this service was helpful and that they learned something new. One man who was helped reported a couple weeks after his lesson that the skills he learned helped him secure employment.
89% of the people that attended the Red Cross Child Care First Aid and CPR course reported that as a result of taking the course, they felt more confident in their ability to deal with emergencies involving children.
100% of the attendees of Young Ideas’ Cooking With program surveyed said they met someone new in the program.
GNH offered 9 English Conversation classes in November and had
131 attendees.
The Seniors Lounge was open for 4 days and was attended by 43 seniors. 100% of the seniors surveyed reported that they enjoy coming and that they have made a new friend in the lounge.

NEW West End Community Herb Gardens Planned for 2016

Exciting news: we've just received funding from the Vancouver Foundation (Greenest City Community Projects) to build more Community Herb Gardens. All we need now is space to build them. Do you have any ideas of good places in the community we should be looking at?  We typically develop Community Herb Gardens in the grassy areas (boulevards) in between the road and sidewalk.

Know of any good boulevards close to where you live? If you do email Susanna Millar (Farmer/Community Programmer) at

Goodness: Recipes and Stories ($30)

Goodness: Recipes & Stories celebrates 37 good food fighters from across Canada—chefs, entrepreneurs, growers, and food activists who believe that good, healthy food should be accessible to all. Each of their stories underlines the simple truth: food has the power to enrich lives and build strong communities. From supporting sustainability to promoting access, outreach, and education, these individuals serve up goodness every day—and here they share some of their favourite recipes too!
Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Executive Director, Paul M. Taylor was interviewed for the book and Chef Peter Nguyen had two of his recipes featured.
Purchase a copy at Gordon Neighbourhood House – they make great gifts. A portion of the proceeds supports Gordon Neighbourhood House and Community Food Centres Canada.
Our Executive Director, Paul M. Taylor was also featured in a La Presse (Montreal, Quebec) article recently. Check it out.

The Launch of the Nourish Project

We are excited to share that Nourish is well underway. This photo series introduces you to people that live, work or volunteer in the West End. The photos feature individuals preparing their favourite dishes.
Each week (Saturdays at 9:00am) a new photo series will be released along with an audio interview. This project explores how the food we make connects us to our community, family and friends.

Kid's Community Kitchen

Chef Peter and the Junior Chefs have all kinds of fun tinkering in the Kitchen after school on Tuesdays. Recently, they also served dinner to seniors headed off on an evening out-trip. We can’t wait to see what you cook up next.

Help us reach our fundraising goal by joining Gordon Neighbourhood House's Walk for Possibility Team

Half the funds you raise will benefit Gordon Neighbourhood House, and the other half will go to United Way of the Lower Mainland to support newcomers in our community. As we know, there will be an influx of newcomers into the Lower Mainland with an estimated 3,000 refugees – 40% of whom will be children – expected to arrive before the walk takes place. We look forward to walking together!
You too can support Gordon Neighbourhood House by making a financial contribution to support any of our programs or initiatives by dropping off a cheque or making an online contribution:
