Together We Grow

Gordon Neighbourhood House is focused on the ongoing measurement of the impact of our programs, activities and initiatives. Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback in one of our surveys or an informational interview. This provides us with useful information on the impact of our work in the community.

Here are a few examples from the last two months:

1. We served 295 Community Lunches. 70% of participants felt more socially connected as a result of attending the Community Lunch Program.

2. Clean Team (a partnership between the West End Business Improvement Association and Gordon Neighbourhood House) volunteers spent 114 hours cleaning the West End community. 90% of those volunteers felt more engaged in their community as a result of volunteering with the Clean Team.

3. The Creative Playtime program had 209 attendees over the last two months. 77% of the parents/grandparents/caregivers felt they had more access to information and support as a result of attending Creative Playtime.

The Seniors Community Planning Table

The Planning Table is not going to be meeting on Friday, November 28th. We will though reconvene on Friday, Dec 5th 10:00AM - 12:00PM. Please join us for a holiday social after the meeting.
Gordon Neighbourhood House has long played an integral role in Vancouver’s West End by providing affordable and accessible programs, activities and initiatives in an effort to forge meaningful relationships between community members and tackle community issues. So upon discovering that 41% of young adults in Metro Vancouver find it difficult to make friends, and that 33% say they feel more alone than they would like to be, we decided to start a new initiative to challenge that in the West End and beyond. Gordon Neighbourhood House has long been known for our programs for newcomers, children/families and seniors. With 48% of the West End's population being between the ages of 20 and 39, we've launched a new group called 'Young Ideas'. We've hosted soccer in the park meet ups, a weekly Pay-What-You-Can drop-in Yoga program, GNH's first Pop-up Pub Night, and most recently, BINGOrdon. Up next we're partnering with West End Games Night to host a gaming event at GNH in early December. Details will soon be available on our Facebook page.

If you're interested in getting involved in the group, suggesting an event/activity, coming to events or volunteering please contact the Young Ideas Coordinator Stephanie Meitz at youngideas@gordonhouse.org
Our friend and neighbour Geraldine Horseman was once a performer on cruise lines around the world, and at 83 years old, she still is.This film was produced in Reel Youth's Youth & Seniors Film Program, in partnership with Gordon Neighbourhood House. The program brought together youth and older adults in a creative collaboration to celebrate older Canadians through story-telling and film, with the added benefit of fostering new inter-generational relationships.

News from the Attic

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve accessibility, and to make the Attic Thrift Store a more welcoming and inclusive community space we are working on a number of important changes. Some of these changes include phasing out the labeling of clothing based on male and female gender identity. Other initiatives at the Attic Thrift Store include animating volunteer training to promote inclusivity and increased accessibility as well as the reorganization of sales racks and shelves to make the space easier to navigate.  Stay tuned for more changes as we continue to work to improve your experience in the Attic Thrift Store. Thanks for your continued support!

Tanya Fabrichnikova

If you have ever visited The Attic thrift store at Gordon Neighbourhood House, chances are you have met Tanya Fabrichnikova. Tanya first started volunteering at the Attic in 1996, and has been a presence at the store ever since!

Prior to moving to Canada, Tanya was a Scientific Coordinator at a science society in Russia. In this role she organized large conferences and seminars as well as meetings with professors, scientists, and technicians. After moving to Canada, Tanya wanted to be better connected with her new community, so she started volunteering at Gordon Neighbourhood House.

She first started volunteering at The Attic to learn more about Canadian life, to meet people, and keep busy while improving her English skills. During her time at The Attic, she quickly realized how important the thrift store is to the community and local residents. “I’ve seen how it has helped so many people in this neighbourhood,” she states. Whether it is someone in need, or an avid thrifter, The Attic has become a special community space thanks to welcoming and tolerant volunteers such as Tanya. “I try to improve the store, and make it more comfortable for customers” she says. The growth of the thrift store, and the proceeds it has raised for Gordon Neighbourhood House bring Tanya great satisfaction, “this makes me feel useful, and I like to bring joy to people.” she states.

Thanks Tanya for everything you do!
