E-newsletter December 2016

Gordon Neighbourhood House evaluates the impact of our work together using a variety of methods. Here is a snap shot of some of the fun we had in October 2016:

With the help of 25 regular volunteers and a variety of community and corporate volunteer groups, this year we expanded to 4 Farm Sites and 10 Community Herb Gardens and grew over 750 lbs of produce.

Every year Gordon Neighbourhood House coordinates the Neighbourhood Small Grants and Greenest City Neighbourhood Small Grants program, funded by the Vancouver Foundation and the City of Vancouver. This year, we awarded 87 community grants!

100% of participants reported that the English Conversation program made them feel more confident about speaking English. One participant said: “Thank you very much for this English class, it gave me more confidence at my work place.”

“The Attic is my favourite store in the whole wide world! I have just moved back to Canada from the U.K. and have found many useful treasures and household goods that I need! Almost every time I need something I find it at the Attic. As a [GNH] Member I particularly like the end of the month sale!! Excellent staff as well.”

Thank you to Susanna and all of our urban farm volunteers for a great 2016 harvest!

We have put some of the plants to bed, and have transitioned into the winter season. This year we expanded to 4 urban farm sites and 10 Community Herb Gardens, grew over 750 lbs of produce, and learned all kinds of new skills.

This was made possible with Susanna’s leadership and her incredible urban farm team. We look forward to having you back in February 2017, and we welcome new volunteers to join.

Together we grow! Contact for details.

Volunteer Spotlight: Saeed

Gordon Neighbourhood House benefits from a special kind of volunteering called knowledge philanthropy. We are very fortunate to have experts in fields from teaching, to graphic design, to baking get engaged in our diverse programs, and share their talents and experience with the community.

Saeed has dedicated several hours of his time each week since September of 2015 as an English Conversation class facilitator. He first got involved because of his passion for helping others, and because he wanted to connect with his community. Saeed always makes the material accessible and fun for the students, who look forward to the classes every week.

“I love teaching at GNH, and it's a highlight of my week connecting with all the lovely people that come to the classes,” says Saeed.

He has seen a lot of meaningful changes among the students in his class: their confidence increases, they initiate conversations, and they meet new people. Saeed and the other English Conversation facilitators are the reason why **100%** of the English Conversation participants have become “more confident with speaking English” through the class.

Thank you Saeed and all the Gordon Neighbourhood House volunteers who make our community programs possible!

Community Advisory Board Update

A huge thanks to our outgoing Board Chair Matt Schroeter. Matt has been a wonderful addition to GNH’s Community Advisory Board and has made a significant contribution to growth of Gordon Neighbourhood House overall. His thoughtful contribution will be missed by his fellow Community Advisory Board members. Matt will remain involved in Gordon Neighbourhood House in a number of ways so you haven’t seen the last of him.

While we’re sad to see Matt go, we’re also excited to announce that James Kim was elected as the new Board Chair for Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Community Advisory Board. Please join us in welcoming James in his new role.

The Community Advisory Board has also decided to make their meetings open to members wishing to attend. Space is limited so RSVP’ing is required. You can RSVP to attend a meeting of the Community Advisory Board by emailing

The 2017 Community Advisory Board Meetings will be held on
January 23, March 20, May 15, September 18 and November 20.

GNH Staff Book Club

Gordon Neighbourhood House’s staff team participate in a book club. We have just finished “An Inconvenient Indian” by Thomas King. It was fantastic! We’re on to our second book, this time the staff team is reading “The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food Transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement” alongside Gordon Neighbourhood House’s Community Advisory Board. “The Stop: How the Fight for Good Food Transformed a Community and Inspired a Movement” was written by Nick Saul and Andrea Curtis.

If you haven’t read it, give it a read and let us know what you think. If you have questions or book club suggestions, feel free to contact us at

Happy Reading!
