E-newsletter September 2016

Gordon Neighbourhood House evaluates the impact of our work together using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in July 2016:

Susanna Millar (Farmer/Community Programmer) and her team of students and over 20 volunteers have had a busy summer growing all kinds of produce. In July alone, 117 lbs. of produce was harvested including (but not limited to) carrots, beets, patty pan squash, salad greens, orca beans, purple garlic, cucumber, fingerling potatoes and zucchinis. They were used in our cooking classes (Cooking With), Community Lunches and Summer Camp.

The Farm Team learned about trellising tomatoes, pollinator plants, composting, braiding garlic, and building self-watering planters.

We have also finished setting up the 4th GNH Urban Farm site, on a rooftop on Seymour Street, which will allow us to grow even more food. See pictures of it below!

Five new Community Herb Gardens were built, bringing the total to 10 Community Herb Gardens the West End!

This July Young Ideas hosted 4 yoga classes, Cooking With, and Absolutely Fabulous (160 people in attendance). Young Ideas also participated in the Davie Street Block Party that engaged hundreds of people.

86% of the Young Ideas event attendees reported that they met someone new. We hope to see you at Brews and Chews on September 16th.

Young Ideas Hosts West End Games Night in New Jim Deva Plaza

Thursdays from 6:00-9:00pm, weather permitting until September 8th

Young Ideas is a volunteer-powered group at Gordon Neighbourhood House who organize social events and activities for neighbours between the ages of 20 and 39 who live, work and volunteer in the West End. Whether you’re excited about food, games, yoga, or music, Young Ideas has imagined events such as: pop-up pubs, clothing swaps, $2 cooking workshops, pay-what-you-can yoga, community kitchens, and meditation classes.

This summer Young Ideas is hosting the West End Games Night in the Jim Deva Plaza in partnership with the West End BIA and the Jim Deva Plaza Community Stakeholder Committee. Every Thursday, the group brings a cart full of games to the plaza to loan out to neighbours who play games on tables in the new space. Young Ideas also constructed ‘Hexapong’, a six person, hexagon-shaped ping pong table for the event. The West End Games Night takes place every Thursday from 6:00-9:00pm weather permitting in the Jim Deva Plaza until September 8th.

Volunteer Spotlight: Tanya C.

The ideas, enthusiasm and time that volunteers put into Gordon Neighbourhood House programs and initiatives is one of our strongest resources.

Tanya C. has been volunteering at the Attic Thrift Store on Davie since it first opened in January 2016. She had recently moved to the community and wanted to “gain experience in Canada while practicing her English.”
When asked what she likes most about volunteering at the Attic, she said that she loves working with seniors in the community and that “it’s a great opportunity to meet people in the neighbourhood.”

Tanya shared that her experience at the Attic Thrift Store really complemented her hard work as a participant in English Conversation classes at Gordon Neighbourhood House on Monday and Tuesday mornings. Immersing herself in an English-speaking setting and directly communicating with customers helped her to practice what she had learned in classroom settings. She’s become more confident as a result and really enjoyed the unique experience that volunteering at the Attic Thrift Store provides. Customers regularly comment on her excellent customer service, and other volunteers look to her for leadership because of her expertise and knowledge of the store.

Thank you to Tanya C. and all of our volunteers for everything that they do to meet the needs of the community!

Neighbourhood Small Grant Activities & Events

NEW Fall and Winter Neighbourhood Small Grants available this year.

The Neighbourhood Small Grants program is the Vancouver Foundation’s unique initiative that helps strengthen our community by funding small, resident-led projects in our neighbourhood. Examples of funded projects include potlucks, workshops, and community gardens.

This year, Neighbourhood Small Grants received additional support from the Community Fund. The fund is a partnership between Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), the Government of Canada and Vancouver Foundation.

Downtown Peninsula residents can apply for up to $500 in funding for their community project that inspires a deeper understanding about the people, places and events that shape our communities and country. Online applications open September 5th to the 23rd.
