Dear New and Returning BFS Families,
Welcome! We begin the year greeting new faces and welcoming back the familiar. All of us, both young and young at heart, are feeling a variety of emotions: excitement, anticipation, shyness and, perhaps, a little fear of the unknown. Collectively, we are opening our arms and welcoming you into our community. This is a special place, where children explore with a sense of wonder and an increasing understanding of their ideas and how they might express them or receive those of others.
As you walk around the rooms, you might notice there is room left for materials to be added later, as interests develop and the need arises. This is a conscious practice of teachers to pare down materials at the beginning of the year. Over the succeeding weeks, children co-construct the room with their teachers, who facilitate the addition of materials and questions to deepen learning and provoke thought. The walls will be colored with the work of students who are bravely sharing their first works with us.
Documentation is an essential component of our work as teachers and will begin to be visible beside the growing collection of work. At times, you may see a learning journey which shares the process of discovery with children and their families. Each week, individual classrooms collect and annotate photographs and videos to show how the learning in each room is evolving. One photo may show the social emotional development of a child, while another may illustrate a leap in cognitive awareness. It is all to give you a window into the world we share at BFS.
We are so excited about the upcoming year and all that we have yet to explore. Our first Community gathering will be at the General Meeting on October 9th, at 7;00 p.m. We can’t wait to see you there. Remember, our doors are open and we are here to share and support you along this journey with you. It is our privilege.
