My dear friends,

Our national partner Tomáš Henžel has written an update on God’s work in the church plant in Bratislava through the first seven months of 2021. Please pray your way through it, making special note of the reasons for thanksgiving.

By the way, in the picture above you can see the core of Slovaks that God originally gathered a few years ago: from left to right, Eva (who just last week gave birth to Paulinka), Petra, Martin (who is an intern in the residency program), Jana (our friend since we first moved to Trnava in 2007), Ivo, Magda (holding Edmund), Matúš, Filip, Soňa, Tomáš, and his wife Sylvia.

Tomáš’s report:

2021 started off with full lockdown—self-isolating in a room for 10 days due to COVID.  We are thankful that the rest of the family stayed healthy and was able to get vaccinated quite soon after. I was blessed to have a speedy recovery since the need for medical personnel in ICU's was immense in the first months of the year. [Note: Tomáš is a doctor, as well as a church planter.]

As a church we started to pray together daily on ZOOM at 9 pm and kept this up until the end of lockdown in April. It was the best thing we did over these months—praying for the sick and the dying, for each other and our families, for my patients and our friends.

Coming out of lockdown in May the Lord enabled us to regather as a church without any limitations in numbers since our meeting space is big enough. We came out of the lockdown with a series in the book of Numbers which has served us greatly. The return went very well. We celebrated Paradox becoming an independent [particular, in PCA lingo] church with the first elders installed. Hospitality resumed. Relationships rebuilt. Internship program went in person again. God has brought in new people to the church and given us a wonderful time at the church’s weekend retreat.

On the national level, under the Slovak chapter of TGC (The Gospel Coalition) we were able to hold an online conference on biblical theology. Vaughan Roberts was our speaker and we translated and published his bestselling book and video series God’s Big Picture.  The conference was well attended and served Slovaks from all around the country.

With our national church planting group PLANt.sk we served a Lutheran group with assessment and together with Acts 29 Europe we held an assessment conference in March for a number of applicant church plants from our part of Europe (Romania, Latvia).

Overall the Slovak church does not seem to be coming out of the second wave of COVID more healthy. On the contrary. The need for more Christ preaching pastors and Gospel centered resources is as big a ever.

Thank you for partnering with us in this ministry.

Tomáš (for all the Bratislava Paradox church family)
