Life science research to tackle societal challenges: EMBL’s perspective

Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 6:15 PM - 7:15 PM

EMBL Director General Professor Iain Mattaj presents ‘Life science research to tackle societal challenges: EMBL’s perspective’.
Excellent science cannot be achieved in isolation. To solve the big questions in life sciences and biomedicine and anticipate the challenges of tomorrow, we need more sophisticated technology and researchers from different backgrounds and countries working together to address these issues. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) recognises these challenges and believes that it is possible to contribute to the development of ambitious cutting-edge scientific projects only through such shared efforts.
EMBL is the only intergovernmental research-performing organisation in the domain of the life sciences, with more than 80 independent research groups covering a broad spectrum of disciplines. EMBL’s focus on molecular and cellular research and technology, coupled with its expertise in big data management and analysis, make it a key player in bridging the world of basic science with translational research and biodiversity through international collaboration.
Hosted by EMBL Australia and Monash BDI, Prof Mattaj will address EMBL’s role and contribution in developing new research methods and tools to ultimately tackle global societal challenges. Professor John Carroll, Director of the Monash BDI, will then lead a Q&A discussion on the importance of organisations, such as EMBL, in advancing biomedical research.
  • Doors open at 6pm.
  • The event will begin at 6.15pm.
  • Registration for this free public event is required.
