So we are finally into October which is arguably one of the busiest months in our calendar. Why? Who knows? Often we need to start gearing up at work, projects to be completed, exams coming up, school fairs, sports events continue….. thank goodness spring is coming!
Winter seems to have ignored this fact, especially here in Christchurch but “smiles everyone – smiles” (Mr Rourke – Fantasy Island, remember that?) – “we want spring to feel welcome!” Energy, warmth, colour, vibrancy are all expected and DP Herbals has a couple of things to help you “spring” into action.
Until next month!

Holiday season is nearly here, and most of us want to shed a few kilo’s before beach weather arrives. Once more we are looking at running another 8 week fitness course with our lovely trainer Kyla. Her years of experience enable anyone to join in at any fitness level as she tailors the exercise to suit. The last 8 weeks have seen the dedicated doing boxing, yoga and circuit – and the results have been very very good! Not only is weight loss being achieved but more importantly exercise tolerance, increased muscle strength, definition and general wellbeing.
Exercise is more than just weight loss. It is known to improve sleep, counter depression, and increase a person’s overall quality of life. It can even reduce or reverse disease progression while helping to improve chronic conditions and even injuries. If you are interested contact us ASAP! Our next set of 8 starts this coming Saturday!

Dates: Saturday mornings 3rd of October – 21st November

Shhhh….. You maybe bugged!
The word probiotic actually means ‘for life’ adopted by Metchnikoff in 1908, stating that “ingested lactobacilli can displace toxin-producing bacteria” promoting health and prolonging life (Elmer, 2001).
The gastrointestinal tract is sterile at birth and normal gut flora develops gradually over time. Its development is influenced by factors such as composition of the maternal gut micro flora, diet, degree of hygiene, use of antibiotics or other medication, the environment and possibly genetic aspects. Once established it surprisingly stays constant throughout life. Therefore, it is difficult to change the composition after this time making successful colonisation with probiotics more that often transient as the digestive tract has many defences that inhibit this process (Vanderhoof & Young, 2002)
- The human digestive system contains over 400 different species of micro-organisms.
- On average, an adult human carries approximately 1 to 2 kilograms of bacterial gut flora!
- Everyone’s gut flora is as individual as a finger print – no two people are alike.
- Some probiotics are transient and do not “colonise” the digestive tract.
- 70% of our immunity lives in our digestive tract which is largely due to balanced digestive flora.
