Th1 versus Th2 – which one is it?

Hi everyone,

It’s been ages! Two months to be exact since the last newsletter and since then so much has happened. The jubilation and celebrations when our All Backs won the Rugby World Cup, then sadness when the late great Jonah Lomu was taken from us too early. A great man who will be sadly missed. This quote is my favourite – one that I try and emulate myself. It’s not bad is it?

Now on to matters at hand. December! December brings an endless barrage of work functions, gatherings & get-togethers.  It is a time of family, friends, love and laughter… and eating & drinking too much! No matter how many times you promise yourself that this year you won’t over-indulge, you and I both know that as quick as you can say ‘pavlova’ a third helping of Christmas pudding can appear on your plate and weight gain can occur.  Fortunately, in the New Year we will continue running a weight loss and fitness class for those who wish to lose fat and tone up! 

Heavy seasonal indulgences of too many fun nights out can take their toll on your liver especially. Fortunately, with a few tricks up our sleeve, we can make our way through the festivities and frivolity without taking too much problems and protect our major organs of detoxification. Then in the New Year you can do a more detailed detoxification which is safe and effective. 

Is a stress free Christmas possible? It’s at this time of year deadlines need to be met, school prize giving’s and Christmas pageants have priority, and work functions are attended (our poor liver). This change in routine, despite it being enjoyable, can cause us to feel more tired and overwhelmed! See what you can do to have a more relaxed and pleasurable experience this Christmas.

Lastly, DP Herbals thank you so very much for your ongoing support. It has been my absolute pleasure to be part of your health journey for 2015, and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year. From my family to yours (and this includes Meisje the clinic cat) here’s wishing you a very safe and relaxing Christmas!

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” …. Champagne bubbles up your nose!

It’s not just Christmas day that can cause weight gain. The weeks beforehand leading up to it are the biggest culprits. Our best intentions will be significantly challenged by events such as work celebrations, prize giving’s and parties. Inevitably offerings of beers, bubbles and burgers will test anyone’s resolve to maintain a clean, lean and healthy diet. This is because Christmas and food go hand in hand, but there is hope! Here are some Christmas tips:

 Tip 1: Chew your food! - Eating slowly inhibits the release of hormones from the digestion helping you to feel full and not overeat. 

Tip 2Never go to a party hungry – Have a protein or fibre snack before you go – this will help you feel fuller for longer. 

Tip 3: Go alcohol free from time to time – Not terribly hard to do with the current driving laws - sharing the sober driving can help here. It is also reasonably common to go to a party and find an alcohol free option such as juice, soda water or other such beverages. They are also less kilojoule filled.

Tip 4: Bring a vegetable or fruit tray - Bring something that you can eat an unlimited amount of so you won't go hungry or risk binging. Add in some hummus dip and you have a healthy snack.

Tip 5: Give it away -  Don't keep leftovers lying around, especially the sugary carb filled kind. Donate the excess to anyone who wants to take home the rest of those brandy snaps or pavlova. (For us it is our kids who are now flatting).

Tip 6: Socialise differently - Instead of meeting at cafés and restaurants how about meeting your friends/family for a walk. 

Tip 7: Don’t beat yourself up if you over indulge – Lastly, once in a while, indulging is actually ok. If you know you have eaten and drunk too much – it is not the end of the world! Just know that tomorrow is another day where you can take up the good fight once more!

Love your liver at Christmas time

Without being a “kill joy” on the party season, most of us are well aware that the over indulgence of foods and alcohol is damaging to the liver and not exactly good for us. The liver acts as a constant complex filter, however too much festive spirit can wreak havoc on this major detoxing organ. When the liver is compromised, toxins re-circulate and can accumulate in the body, acting as a constant drain on health & vitality

Fortunately, there are measures you can do to reduce the consequences of excessive socialising. Thank goodness! 

Liver supportive foods i.e beets, carrots, artichokes, garlic, leafy greens, avocados, apples, grapefruit (in moderation), olive oil can help activate liver enzymes that help your body flush out toxins.

Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day – the liver loves water.

Make sure you eat enough protein such as meat, eggs, nuts, seeds, fish, tofu and dairy. These are all good sources and help the liver to detox on a daily basis. 

Increase omega-3’s i.e fish oil to help repair the damaged linings of our cells.

Exercise in fresh, clean air – helps with digestion, metabolism and of course helps with fitness.

Limit alcohol – aim for at least 2 alcohol free days a week & look for alcohol reduced options.

Limit additives, junk foods and take aways – regular consumption can bombard the liver.

Lastly, (wait for it) consider supporting your liver with herbs, homoeopathy or nutritional supplementation both in times of heavy demand and to help them re-set afterwards. We have teas, homeopathic, supplements, tonics and of course …… state of the art advice!
