Natural Medicine – Is It Safe?

With the year galloping away on us I am happy to say that we have only a few weeks left until spring. In August, you will find some brave bulbs “bulbing” and several blossoms blossoming, leading the way from hibernation. It’s an optimistic time.
August is also a special time for DP Herbals as it is the birth month of the clinic! Opened in 2010, So it is very timely that this month we are starting a brand new 8 week fitness class for all those who are doing the Shake it system or DP Herbals weight loss program. Want to look and feel great for Spring? Our lovely physical trainer Kyla from mini fitness will be leading the way. There will be a mix of yoga, pilates and fitness training to kick start weight loss and head into springtime with a head start! I am proud of you all!
So for now enjoy the rest of Winter and celebrate the breakthrough warmer moments!
Until next month

Combating bugs with bacteria! Which ones work?

Probiotics (also known as friendly bacteria) beneficially affect humans by improving the balance of flora in the gut.  Stress, poor diet, infection, antibiotics and other medications may all contribute to a disruption of bacteria, putting you at increased risk for digestive disturbances, infection and disease.
What can probiotics do? Human clinical trials have proven that specific strains of probiotics can:

  • Help maintain general wellbeing and healthy digestive function.
  • Reduce the side-effects of antibiotic therapy such as diarrhoea and yeast infections.
  • Improve immune resistance against other infections.
  • Reduce allergic symptoms and help in the management of atopy and/or food sensitivities.
  • Assist in management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
While all probiotics are considered safe and friendly in a broad sense, not all probiotics possess the ability to work effectively on every condition.  Here are a few specific strains:
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG®) is a human probiotic strain that has been extensively studied and demonstrated to:
  • Assist in preventing eczema in children at high risk. It also decreases the severity and duration of acute diarrhoea.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 is a highly bioactive strain of probiotic that assists in:
  • Maintenance of healthy immune resistance in adults.
  • Decreasing immune reactivity in cases of allergies, such as eczema.
Lactobacillus plantarum 299v has a range of actions different from other Lactobacillus strains. This exclusive probiotic strain may assist in:
  • Management of medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and regulates inflammation systemic.
Saccharomyces boulardii is non-pathogenic yeast that is recognised to have probiotic effectiveness used alone or in combination with other probiotics. It may be useful for:
  • Managing yeast overgrowths within the gut.

Yoga and stretching are both good for
chronic low back pain

The facts: 228 adults with chronic low back pain underwent 12 weekly classes of yoga or conventional stretching exercises, or used a self-care book, to compare the 3 commonly used treatments for chronic low back pain.

Yoga classes and stretching classes were more effective than a self-help book at improving function and reducing symptoms in patients with chronic low back pain, with benefits lasting at least
several months.

Participants in both exercise groups were able to cut back on their medication use over time.
Who doesn’t have a bad back?! Lower back pain is one of the most common medical conditions, yet we still do not know what are the best ways to treat it. This practical study found that both yoga classes and stretching classes were approximately equally effective in improving function and reducing symptoms. Fewer pain-relieving medications were needed and, interestingly, the benefits lasted for at least several months in many cases.

Why not try something new?

Treat yourself to a new herbal tea or blend once every month or two. Not only will you expand your palate, but you will enjoy the health benefits of herbal tea. Many scientific studies support the health benefits of herbal teas and what our ancestors knew all along - that the special, protective, healing properties of herbs and spices can continue to support, restore, and revitalize our bodies and minds.
Herbal tea or a tisane (pronounced "tea-ZAHN") is a hot or cold infusion made from herbs, spices, leaves, flowers, fruits, berries, seeds, roots, bark, or any combination of these. DP Herbals has a range of herbal tea that are delicious, affordable and organic. Yum!!
