Welcome to Circle

Welcome to Circle's new quarterly external newsletter. Here you will find an overview of some of the latest happenings at Circle, as well as finding out information about upcoming events.

Kinship Choir

The Kinship Care team, with the dedicated support from Maggie Mellon, has paired up with Sing in the City to form Edinburgh’s first Kinship Choir. The choir, partly funded by Big Lottery, held its first session on the 9th of September, and had carers literally singing praise of how much they enjoyed the experience. The choir runs every Tuesday from 10am-12noon in St Andrews and St George's West Church, Edinburgh next to the George Hotel. All carers are welcome, so please spread the word.

ISSEP

The Inter School Social Education Project (ISSEP) started back on the 1st of September with 28 eager high school volunteers being paired with primary aged children from the local Pilton area. The first two weeks have been great fun, with special bonds already forming! One child commented, “the only thing I wouldn’t like would be not having you as a buddy” and another child remarking that the first session was the “best day of her life”. It is comments like these that make the project so worthwhile. We are always keen to recruit more high school students to expand reach of the service and support more children.

Scripture Union Holiday Camps

Wow, another hectic Summer! 49 Children were booked to attend this year’s Scripture Union Activity Holidays at various venues throughout Scotland. Despite a few trials & tribulations along the way the feedback again was very positive from the children attending with many parents commenting on increased confidence on their return home.
A few memorable comments obtained from the children include:

"The leaders are great the boy’s and the girls are fun you meet them throught differnt activety’s overall it was good I would go back again if I could it was amazen"

"I want to be a volunteer, they are lovely really friendly & helpful"

It is hoped that funding will be secured for 2015 and that the great partnership between Scripture Union & Prison Fellowship will continue to be supported. Roll on 2015!

Annual Lecture

This year’s lecture focuses on the importance of Practice Learning. As a former student of the organisation, Professor Bill Whyte discusses the importance of such learning for social work students in the present, highlighting why a placement which equips students with the broadest range of knowledge and skills is vital. All interested in this topic are welcome to join. Event Details

Students at Circle

In line with the focus of our annual lecture, Circle currently has a record 13 students on placement from the University of Edinburgh, University of Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian University and Glasgow School of Social Work. Students value the opportunity to learn in a practical environment as it complements the theoretical learning of the university environment, and thus contributes to a fuller understanding of the discipline.

Secret Diary of a
Family Support Worker

Every month, Circle staff take it in turns to write up a diary of one of their working weeks. Each diary is then anonymously published online. The diaries show real insight into the work of Circle and also evidence the variety of services offered, with each diary detailing very different day to day tasks and responsibilities. All diaries can be found here:
