May 2021

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our DachsLife 2021 breed health survey. With around 9500 responses, we have a fantastic set of data to analyse and to help us draw conclusions about allergies and skin disease in the breed.

As with our 2015 IVDD and Lifestyle Survey we will aim to publish practical advice for buyers and owners, based on the 2021 findings.

Our initial analysis has replicated the finding of previous surveys that neutered Dachshunds have an increased risk of IVDD.

Of the dogs in the survey that were 4 years or older and affected by IVDD, 717 (78.8%) were neutered and 191 (21.0%) were entire. Of the known ages for neutering, 39.7% (276 of 696) were neutered under the age of 1 and 63.5% (442 of 696) were neutered under the age of 2.

The chart here shows the age of onset of IVDD of dogs in the survey.

Beware illegal puppy imports

Dachshunds are now the most smuggled breed of dog coming into the UK. Please read our Advice for Buyers.

The youngest puppy seized by authorities last year and taken into Dogs Trust’s care was just four weeks old, and the average age was just eight weeks. In the five years to 2020, the Dogs Trust found puppies that were seized at the border and went into quarantine primarily came from Hungary (16%), Poland (12%), Romania (10%) and Slovakia (5%).

IF YOU ARE FACED WITH VIOLENCE THEN IT IS IMPERATIVE TO STEP BACK.

THIEVES CAN BE JUST OPPORTUNISTS LOOKING FOR AN EASY SOURCE OF MONEY

BUT THEY CAN ALSO BE ARMED CRIMINALS ACTING IN AN ORGANISED GANG

POLICE ADVICE IS THAT THEY ARE THE FIRST PORT OF CALL AND THAT YOU CONTACT THEM FIRST AFTER A THEFT OR ATTEMPTED THEFT USING 999 AND WAIT FOR THEM TO TURN UP NO MATTER HOW LONG IT TAKES. RING 101 IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS. ALSO, IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO CARRY A WEAPON.
