Sausage Dog Days - did you get your copy?

www.sausagedogdays.com – a new website – has been launched by Candy Jones who has very generously raised funds for the Breed Council’s work on IVDD and Charlotte Baldwin‘s charity (Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD) with the launch of her first book. You can order a copy on her brand new website.

Candy created Sausage Dog Days (and its upcoming sequel) to raise money for the two charities. Both of these charities were very important to her when her Dachshund, Bonnie, was going through her operations and recovery from IVDD.

Thank you Candy for the recent donation to our charity.

Subsidised KC/BVA Eye Screening

The Dachshund Club will be hosting a clinical eye screening session at their Championship Show on 16th November at the KC Building, Stoneleigh. Dr Peter Bedford is the panel eye specialist who will be carrying out the screening.

Our charity, Dachshund Health UK, has agreed to offer subsidies to Dachshund owners so the cost of this test will be just £20. The session will be open to other breeds at a cost of £42 per dog.

To book a place, please contact Daphne Graham

Examination under the Eye Scheme is not restricted to the identification of inherited eye disease, but also includes general assessment of the health of the eye and adnexa (eyelids, tear ducts and other parts around the eye ball).

Read more about eye disease in Dachshunds.

The Breed Council recommends breeders should carry out clinical eye testing (KC/BVA/ISDS) to check for conditions in addition to cord1 PRA. Read more here about why this is important.

Our Health website has a new infographic summarising the relative risks of different health issues in the breed and our current advice related to these.

Lafora Disease in non-UK Dachshunds

The Health Committee has recently received reports of some Miniature Smooth Dachshunds in the USA being DNA tested as Lafora Carriers. This appears to be because these dogs are the result of cross-variety matings in the past, introducing the Lafora mutation from Mini Wires.

We strongly recommend that anyone importing a Dachshund from outside the UK, where cross-variety matings are allowed, should ensure these dogs are DNA tested for Lafora Disease.

We have also previously recommended that anyone outside the UK who imports a Mini Wire from the UK should insist on knowing its Lafora status.

Have you borrowed a stroller or other equipment from "Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD"?

Charlotte Baldwin wants to contact everyone that has been loaned equipment from Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD to check how helpful it was for you and your Dachshund.

The equipment may not have been brand new when you received it and we do expect there will be wear and tear but all the equipment should have been in good working order.

Please complete this short survey if you have borrowed any equipment.

East Hampshire Dachshunds Sports Day - 22nd September
Location: Pawswoof Doggy Daycare, Portsmouth, Hampshire

"We are hosting a Sports Day in September and would like Dachshund Health UK to be our charity of choice as we thought it not only fitting but appropriate given the nature of the event. We have several IVDD sufferers and survivors in our group which makes it more worth while when its close to home!
