Dachshund Breed Health & Conservation Plan - coming soon

Representatives from the Breed Council's Health Committee met with the Kennel Club's Health team last month to review the first draft of our Breed Health and Conservation Plan.

The purpose of Breed Health and Conservation Plans is to ensure that all health concerns are identified through good evidence and that breeders are provided with useful information and resources to support them in making balanced breeding decisions that make health a priority.

We are currently working on an agreed set of actions and the final versions (1 for each Dachshund variety) will be shared at the next Breed Council meeting. Further details will be shared in this newsletter and via our Health Website.

Scottish Dachshund Fun Day – a day at the races!

More than 200 Dachshunds (and their owners) turned out for the Scottish Dachshund Club’s Walk and Fun Day at Musselburgh Racecourse on Sunday 15th July. Two highlights of the day, Dachshund lure racing and agility, were both a great success.

The fun day was in aid of Dachshund Rescue and IVDD. Secretary Christine Russell said “Thanks to everyone for all their effort and to all the busy people who gave up their Sunday to help.

Convenor, Colin McGavigan said “Thank you to Clan Mitchell and their friends for organising and managing such a fabulous event, thank you to theDirectors and Staff of Musselburgh Racecourse for all their assistance in letting us have an event that actually felt like we were hosting it on our own premises, an amazing soft touch management approach by the race course. Thank you to all our sponsors and the vendors on the day“.

We’re looking forward to hearing how much money was raised for two very important causes.

Here are a few pictures from the day. Visit the SDC Facebook page for more photos.

Fun in the sun for Wire Dachshunds (and their friends)

The Wirehaired Dachshund Club held a Fun Day at Sue Gilkes’s farm near Chipping Norton. More than 80 dogs and their humans turned up to have a go at Tracking, Scurry, Obedience, Agility and Tunnel Work, as well as a Fun Show.

Huge thanks must go to Sue and her husband for providing the facilities at their farm and to the WHDC’s committee and helpers for making the day such a success. Funds raised will go to support Lafora Screening and the Cinnamon Trust.

Arrival between 10am and 1pm on the day.  No appointments, first come first served.
The Wire Haired Dachshund Club has kindly increased its subsidy for this session only (and funds are running low so who knows whether there will be any left for future sessions?)  Cost this time will be £90 per dog.
We are aware that this test is now offered by Laboklin in this country, however, the Laboklin test is not yet recognised by our Kennel Club and therefore results will not be registered on your dog's KC records.

Christmas has come early!

This year, Devoted to Dachshunds is again raising money for research into IVDD and also for those dogs already sadly affected with the disease. EVERY PENNY (the entire £5) from the sale of these lovely cards will be split between the Dachshund Breed Council's research into the condition and the charity, 'Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD' which raises money for rehabilitation, wheelchairs and strollers.  There is a choice of 5 designs.
