2018 Breed Health Survey

You can take part in our new survey here.
Complete the survey here

Questions cover:
- Details of your Dachshund
- Any history of, or treatment for, cancers and tumours
- Any other health issues

Don't worry if you don't have a detailed veterinary diagnosis of your dog's cancer. Not everyone is able to have a biopsy or post-mortem done but if you can tell us how your dog was affected, that will be fine.

All responses will be treated as confidential and all results will be presented anonymously.  No owners or dogs will be identifiable from the reports produced.  You do not have to tell us your name, or your dog's name, if you do not wish to.

Please submit a new form for each additional Dachshund using the link at the end of the survey.

"All about Dachshunds" workshop - limited spaces still available

The Southern Dachshund Association is running a seminar/workshop on 29th September 2018. The venue will be Pirbright Village Hall, near Guildford. The day will be designed to provide information and advice to existing, new and potential Dachshund owners. You don’t have to be a member of SDA to come along.
The format will include a series of presentations combined with hands-on help and advice workshops for small groups.
The seminar will not be tailored to teach potential judges about the Breed Standard.

Speakers include:

  • Helen Geeson - genetics of coat and colour
  • Mandy Dance - owning & living with a dachshund
  • Tina West - grooming
  • Sue Ergis - breeding
  • Ian Seath - health and health screening
Tickets are £15/person, including refreshments. Contact to book a place.

DNA testing for Lafora Disease

We have been informed by Dr Tom Lewis from the KC that they will now accept Lafora DNA test results from Laboklin and Genomia.

The KC has had an opportunity to request and examine details of the development of Laboklin’s test. The information provided, along with the concordant results of ‘blind’ testing provided by the Wirehaired Dachshund Club, means they are confident that Laboklin is able to accurately determine the three genotypes; ‘clear’, ‘carrier’ and ‘affected’. Therefore, after consideration and consultation with Dr Cathryn Mellersh at the AHT, the Kennel Club is happy to begin accepting, recording and publishing on the Health Test Results Finder the results of DNA tests for Lafora’s from Laboklin.

The test is also available from Genomia in the Czech Republic and this lab may be more convenient for Mini Wire owners outside the UK.

Due to low demand, the planned WHDC screening session on 3rd October has been cancelled. If you still wish to use Dr Minassian's lab in Canada to test your Mini Wires, please contact Mandy Dance.

Thank you to the WHDC Lafora team

We are sure our readers will want to express their thanks to the Wirehaired Dachshund Club's Lafora Team for all their hard work over the past few years. Sue Holt and Nora Price have been the core of the team running screening sessions from the start. Sue is about to move her family to France and we wish her all the best for her new life.

The trend chart (below) showing safe and unsafe litters is a clear demonstration of the impact of the whole team's work and, of course, the commitment of UK Mini Wire breeders to deal with Lafora.

2018 Calendar Fundraising update

Thank you to Nadine Miles for donating £2755 from the sale of Dachshund Calendars to our IVDD fund. She and her team put a huge amount of work into collecting an amazing set of pictures for the 2018 calendar. Well done!

2018 Animal Welfare Regulations

New regulations affecting dog breeders in ENGLAND come into force on 1st October 2018. DEFRA has issued Guidance Notes and various other organisations, including the Kennel Club, have published advice for breeders.

Despite all the information that has been published, there is still some confusion about who requires a Breeder’s Licence. We have published an article to summarise the relevant advice for ordinary dog owners who may also breed and show their dogs.

Read the article and links to further guidance here.
