We would like to thank Sam and Kerry, the organisers of Dachshund Town 2018, for allowing the Breed Council to have a stand at the event in Milton Keynes on 9th June. They generously also supplied a hamper for us to raffle in aid of funds for our Charity: Dachshund Health UK.

There were lots of very well-behaved Dachshunds enjoying a day in the sun with fun show classes and other competitions.

We had the opportunity to meet with many owners and offer advice on buying and owning a Dachshund. A few dogs were over-weight and we had discussions about diet and exercise with their owners.

Among the numerous stands, Dachshund Rescue and The Red Foundation both also had a presence and were fundraising for their good causes. Both these rescue organisations are reporting an increase in calls for help and, like us, worry about the over-popularity of Mini Smooths. The current demand is fuelling an increase in illegal imports, puppy farming and breeders jumping on the bandwagon to sell “rare coloured” Dachshunds.

Look out for details of the next Dachshund Town event: "A day at the races" to be held near Milton Keynes on August 25th 2018.

All about Dachshunds - seminar

The Southern Dachshund Association is running a seminar/workshop on 29th September 2018. The venue will be Pirbright Village Hall, near Guildford. The day will be designed to provide information and advice to existing, new and potential Dachshund owners. You don’t have to be a member of SDA to come along.
The format will include a series of presentations combined with hands-on help and advice workshops for small groups.
The seminar will not be tailored to teach potential judges about the Breed Standard.

Speakers include:

  • Helen Geeson - genetics of coat and colour
  • Mandy Dance - owning & living with a dachshund
  • Tina West - grooming
  • Sue Ergis - breeding
  • Ian Seath - health and health screening
Tickets are £15/person, including refreshments. Contact ian@sunsong.co.uk to book a place.

Sharing our Breed Strategy

In June, Breed Council Chairman Ian Seath was invited to make a presentation on Breed Improvement Strategies to the Dog Breeding Reform Group (DBRG). The DBRG is a registered charity that aims to promote humane behaviour towards animals by providing and supporting initiatives to improve dog welfare. It wants to be “a voice for dogs” and was founded by Carol Fowler who now chairs the group. Recently, they were the recipient of the CEVA Animal Welfare Award for Charity Team of the Year 2018.

Several members and trustees were present at the International Dog Health Workshop (IDHW) held in Paris last year, so had already heard his 10-minute version of the Dachshund Breed Council’s improvement journey. Two had also been participants in the IDHW Breed Strategy workshop sessions. This was, therefore, an opportunity for Ian to talk in more general terms about what a strategy for improvement might include as well as describing our approach in the Dachshunds.

Read Ian's blog post about the event and his presentation.

Candy Jones has written Sausage Dog Days, an exciting and beautifully illustrated children's picture book, to raise funds and awareness for charities supporting dachshunds who suffer from intervertebral disc  disease (IVDD). Candy's crowdfunder closed on 30th June and has successfully raised the money needed to publish the book.

Thanks to the 182 people who pledged over £5000 to get the book published.

Identification required for recording of DNA test results

Following consultation with the Dog Health Group, the Kennel Club has confirmed that, from 1st August 2018, any DNA health test result submitted for inclusion on its database must have at least two forms of identification on the result certificate.

It will be mandatory to include the dog’s microchip or tattoo number along with either the dog’s registered name or registered number. Any test results that do not carry these identifying features will not be accepted.

This brings the recording of DNA test results in line with those health tests carried out by the British Veterinary Association.

Christmas has come early!

This year, Devoted to Dachshunds is again raising money for research into IVDD and also for those dogs already sadly affected with the disease. EVERY PENNY (the entire £5) from the sale of these lovely cards will be split between the Dachshund Breed Council's research into the condition and the charity, 'Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD' which raises money for rehabilitation, wheelchairs and strollers.  There is a choice of 5 designs:

'Shopping Season'is a lovely design, generously donated by Joy FitzSimmons of London Pooch.  Little dachsie in wheels takes centre stage on this fun and festive card

'Christmas Jumper' shows a cheeky sausage proudly showing off his festive jumper. Image is adapted from an original design by Super Cat

'Snow Sausage' features Jemma, a very cute mini long hair dachsie. Image is by kind permission of Chris Meads (photographer) and Maureen Meads (owner)

'Wirey Christmas' shows an adorable wire haired dachshund carefully guarding a pile of presents. Image is from an original photo by Ivonne Wierink

'All Wrapped Up' is an original design by Amy Cartwright and depicts a happy little sausage dog in the snow, his loooong body cosily cocooned in a festive red scarf.
