2018 Breed Health Survey

You can take part in our new survey here. We want to know about healthy dogs as well as those who have been ill or died. Thank you to the 1750 people who have completed the survey, so far. Let's try to exceed the 2000 responses we had in 2015.
Complete the survey here

Questions cover:
- Details of your Dachshund
- Any history of, or treatment for, cancers and tumours
- Any other health issues

Don't worry if you don't have a detailed veterinary diagnosis of your dog's cancer. Not everyone is able to have a biopsy or post-mortem done but if you can tell us how your dog was affected, that will be fine.

All responses will be treated as confidential and all results will be presented anonymously.  No owners or dogs will be identifiable from the reports produced.  You do not have to tell us your name, or your dog's name, if you do not wish to.

Please submit a new form for each additional Dachshund using the link at the end of the survey.
Read the Health Committee's discussion paper on the risks of exaggeration and what the Breed Standard says about length, height and ground clearance.

The genetics of Dachshund coats and colours

The Southern Dachshund Association ran a seminar/ workshop on 29th September 2018 and one of the speakers was Helen Geeson who is a member of our Health Committee. Helen has given this presentation before and you can view her slides here (pdf) and a video here.

Dachshunds - the owner's guide

You will find this book jam packed full of useful quotes giving clear advice and tips from the world’s best Dachshund breeders who, between them, have hundreds of years of experience in caring for Dachshunds.

This is now available as an Audio Book.

After the success of the crowdfunding campaign, Sausage Dog Days is planned to be published in October.

1st October 2018 - New Animal Welfare Regulations

New regulations affecting dog breeders in ENGLAND come into force on 1st October 2018. DEFRA has issued Guidance Notes and various other organisations, including the Kennel Club, have published advice for breeders.

Despite all the information that has been published, there is still some confusion about who requires a Breeder’s Licence. We have published an article to summarise the relevant advice for ordinary dog owners who may also breed and show their dogs.

Read the article and links to further guidance here.

Countdown to Christmas

This year, Devoted to Dachshunds is again raising money for research into IVDD and also for those dogs already sadly affected with the disease. EVERY PENNY (the entire £5) from the sale of these lovely cards will be split between the Dachshund Breed Council's research into the condition and the charity, 'Dedicated to Dachshunds with IVDD' which raises money for rehabilitation, wheelchairs and strollers.  There is a choice of 5 designs.
