Dachshund Health UK is a Registered Charity now

We are delighted to announce that we have successfully registered Dachshund Health UK as a charity, recognised by the Charity Commission.
The Trustees are: Roger Sainsbury - Chairman, Katherine Herrington, Pauline Kerslake, Gill Key, Anne Moore and Ian Seath.

The application to apply for charitable status was taken because of the significant amount of fundraising that has been done over recent years and the need to formalise the way these funds are managed.

At the end of 2017, the Health Fund had a balance of £29,000. During last year we made donations of just over £2000 to health improvement initiatives such as IVDD screening.

Thank you to all our fundraisers for helping us so far; we really appreciate your support. Look out for more opportunities to support Dachshund Health UK during 2018.

Lafora fundraising

We'd like to say a big THANK YOU to Arnold and Ann Derry for their continuing efforts to raise funds for Lafora Screening. Arnold is a former Chairman of the Wirehaired Dachshund Club and will be judging Wires at Crufts in 2019.

Here are Arnold and Ann doing their bit at the recent club show:

Lafora Screening update

Mini Wire owners may be aware that 2 additional laboratories are now offering testing: Laboklin in the UK and Genomia (Czech Republic). Currently, the results from these labs will not be accepted by the Kennel Club and we recommend owners continue to use the WHDC's subsidised scheme which uses Dr Minassian's lab in Canada.

We are working with Laboklin to validate their test by matching a set of samples with results from Canada. As soon as we have confirmation that the test results match, we will advise the KC accordingly.

For details of how to screen your Mini Wire, please email

Man's best friend!

The Dachshund is given special status in Passau: Germany's first Dachshund Museum opens there. It offers plenty of insights into this four-legged friend.

Have a go at Dog Showing

This event will be run in conjunction with the SDA Open Show at Pirbright Village Hall (near Guildford) on Sunday 24th June 2018. Anyone who hasn’t shown before or who has less than a year’s experience and who wants to find out what’s involved in showing a Dachshund is welcome to attend. You don’t have to enter the show to take part in this. It’s a bit of fun and education for newcomers.

This will only run if the weather is dry and the classes can be held outside. Start time 12:00. Free!

Places are limited: contact the Chairman to reserve your place.

Walks against IVDD

Join "Walks Against IVDD" on their monthly walks to help fight against IVDD in our beloved Dachshunds. These virtual walks are open to ALL dog walkers, ANYWHERE in the country. Simply sign up for this month's challenge & share your #WalkAgainstIVDD pics to earn your rosette.
All profit from every entry (minus minimal running costs) is donated to research against IVDD. Let's put a STOP to this heartbreaking disease.
