CAAST-Net Plus Food Security Workshop at Africa Techno Forum
CAAST-Net Plus is hosting a session on Africa-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation in Food and Nutrition Security: Innovation and Private Sector Management on 26 November, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

"The workshop aims to learn more about the opportunities and challenges faced by innovators in the area of food and nutrition security, while exploring how to better take into account the interests of entrepreneurs in an EU-African Research and Innovation Platform on Food and Nutrition Security," says organiser, Nejma André, of France's Institute for Research Development (IRD).

The event is organised by CAAST-Net Plus partner, IRD, and is held in conjunction with the Africa Techno Forum taking place from 23-27 November in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

On the Agenda: Food, Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture
Working in collaboration with the Research and Innovation Network for Europe and Africa (RINEA) project, CAAST-Net Plus partners and stakeholders participated in a meeting in Brussels on 2 October 2015 to explore non-traditional approaches to addressing issues of food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture (FNSSA).

The discussions highlighted shared FNSSA priority areas between Europe and Africa in the context of the utilisation of science, technology and innovation as key drivers of economic growth. Discussions also emphasised that deeper engagement by both public and private sectors is necessary in addressing FNSSA challenges.

"A take-home message is that we need to change our mindset from looking at small funding baskets for research and look to bigger financing opportunities and partnerships with the private sector in these domains," says Judith Ann Francis of the Technical Centre for Rural and Agricultural Cooperation (CTA), a CAAST-Net Plus partner.

Participants of the CAAST-Net Plus workshop on Africa-EU climate change research and innovation (Bergen, Norway: 7-8 September 2015).
The Research Council of Norway (RCN), a CAAST-Net Plus partner, organised a stakeholder workshop earlier this year to discuss the implications of EU-Africa collaboration in research and innovation climate change and related global challenges.

"While climate change is a cross-cutting concern, the discussion sought to explore how innovations might serve the needs of the health and food security sectors," says Dr. Arne Tostensen, a senior researcher at the Chr. Michelsen Institute and a co-organiser of the event.
