Pathways for Research Uptake

CAAST-Net Plus is co-organising a workshop with the Development Research Uptake in Sub-Saharan Africa (DRUSSA) project.

Our shared ambition? To initiate a series of discussions that adopt a fresh approach to issues of knowledge transfer and research uptake.

To achieve this goal, we have carefully selected speakers from policy, business, academic and funding communities to animate discussion on three key topics:
  • Transferring Knowledge: Research Agendas, Challenges, Visions and Good Practices;
  • Emerging Lessons from CAAST-Net Plus and DRUSSA; and
  • Building Partnerships for Research Uptake and Knowledge Transfer.
Building on discussions at the first CAAST-Net Plus stakeholder forum, and DRUSSA project outputs and engagements, the event is organised as a session forming part of next month's Research and Innovation for Global Challenges conference.

The conference is co-hosted by the Association of Commonwealth (ACU) Universities and the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA) between 10-14 May 2015.

A roadmap on Africa-Europe research and innovation cooperation on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture is expected to be ready at the end of April 2015.

It will then be handed over to the Bureau of the EU-Africa High-Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation (HLPD Bureau), a structure set up at the 2007 EU-Africa Summit to support policy dialogue between the two regions.

The goal of the London meeting in March 2015 was to give shape to this roadmap. The two-day agenda encouraged discussions between a range of actors, including:
  • members of the HLPD Bureau;
  • the Expert Working Group, convened by the Bureau, to develop the roadmap;
  • potential funders of actions envisaged in the draft roadmap;
  • partners from the CAAST-Net Plus and ERAfrica projects, as well as the newly formed Research and Innovation Network for Europe and Africa (RINEA).
"CAAST-Net Plus, ERAfrica and RINEA are joint EU-Africa projects that are working together to support and reinforce the broad EU-Africa relationship around cooperation in scientific and technological research, and the EU-Africa STI partnership in particular," says CAAST-Net Plus project coordinator Dr Andrew Cherry.

"The projects employ a range of different but complementary coordination and support mechanisms."

It is hoped that the roadmap will lead to a co-financed and co-managed research and innovation partnership between Europe and Africa, with an initial focus on food security, but extending to other domains.
