The second CAAST-Net Plus Annual Assembly took place in Lisbon between 17-19 July 2014. Our aim? To review our progress and to plan for the road ahead.

Looking back, over the last 18 months the consortium has really moved ahead with the analysis of Africa-EU research cooperation in global challenges, and with raising the awareness across Africa of the opportunities for collaboration in scientific and technological research and innovation under the EU’s new Horizon 2020 programme. Our third bi-annual magazine, featured below, reflects some of this work.

Moving ahead, in the short term it’s our aim to continue to offer support to the expert working group on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture, convened by the Bureau of the High Level Policy Dialogue on Science, Technology and Innovation, to develop an EU-Africa research cooperation roadmap. We are pleased to have already supplied our report on EU-Africa cooperation in food security for the consideration of the expert group.

Over the longer term, in the next year partners will be designing ways of improving aspects of EU-Africa research and innovation cooperation in food security, health and climate change. We look forward to keeping you informed of our progress in future issues of this Quarterly Update

Read the discussion soundbites here, and the original discussion concept note here.

Our thanks are due to all panelists and discussion participants, and to EDCTP for their collaboration.

A range of scientists and policy-makers from East Africa and the European Union gathered to attend this CAAST-Net Plus event.

"There was consensus on the findings from the CAAST-Net Plus analytical report presented at the workshop, and many proposals on how to build capacity and ownership among countries in the region to fully participate as equal partners in joint research projects funded through the EU’s framework programmes," said Michael Hughes of Rwanda's Ministry of Education, which hosted the workshop.

The presentations from this workshop are now available for download.
