Welcome to the September 2016 edition of Bio-Link Community news!

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I hope your classes are getting off to a good start.

We have a lot of exciting events on the calendar this year.  One of the most fun, will be our new webinar series.  Tom Tubon from Madison College, and I, are kicking off the series Sept. 30th,  with a talk on CRISPR and Cas9.  Some of you may have heard our presentation in June at Bio-Link summer fellows, but as you know, this is a rapidly changing area, and Tom always has a new twist to contribute.

In October, you'll get to learn about an interactive movie on working in a biotech company, created as a collaboration between Bio-Link and Pellet Productions. Learn more in the Interactive movie blog series by Lisa Seidman.

Towards the end of fall semester, Bio-Link leaders will team up with the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center to talk about the Core Bioscience Skill Standards for Biotechnicians and how these can be used to support your teaching.

In January, we'll set the stage for the upcoming CSO summit in Austin next spring.

In the spring, webinars will address the topics of certification for biotechnicians and the new Bachelors degree programs in biotech and biomanufacturing.

Look for registration instructions on our website together with links to past webinars.  Enjoy!

2016 Webinar Schedule

Genome Engineering with CRISPR/Cas9 webinar

Tune in on September 30th AT 1PM ET to Bio-Link's seminar on Genome Engineering with CRISPR/Cas9.

Together CRISPR and Cas provide bacteria with an adaptive immune system that allows them to identify and defend against new viral invaders. While characterizing the basic biology of this system, researchers discovered that the Cas9 protein could be harnessed to engineer genomic DNA. In this session, we will discuss the basic biology of the CRISPR / Cas system and discuss how researchers are using this system in new ways to engineer living things.

We will explore molecular models of Cas proteins bound to CRISPR RNA and DNA from the Molecule World iPad app. A collection of these structures can be found in the CRISPR Structure Collection from Digital World Biology.

Let your know students know you're a Bio-Link program!

Are you a Bio-Link program leader or member of a Bio-Link program?

If you are, you know that being a Bio-Link program means that you're interested in preparing your students for careers in the biotech workforce.  Show your students that your college or high school is committed to preparing them for their future by letting them know you're part of a national network devoted to the best in biotech education.

We've made logos available at our website that you can use to show your students you're part of Bio-Link.   Download one (or both) of Bio-Link logos from our media kit and display it on your program web site.  If you really want to be fancy, add a link to Bio-Link.org.

National Institutes of Health Community College Day

The National Institutes of Health Community College Day is still almost two months away but it is so much fun we wanted to make sure it was on your calendar.  Save October 28th for a day of learning and career development at NIH.

Instructors are encouraged to bring classes. Busses can drop students off at the Gateway Visitor's Center.

Individuals are asked to register by October 10th.

Bio-Link National and Regional Leaders to Speak at the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) Conference

Bio-Link will be at the NABT conference this year for the first time. Dr.'s Sandra Porter, Bio-Link and Linnea Fletcher, head of the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center, will give a presentation on biotechnology education at the NABT conference Friday, November 4th from 2:00 to 3:15pm in Plaza Court 4.

If you're going to be at NABT, come listen to the presentation and be sure to visit the AC2 - Bio-Link booth!

Make your own Recruiting Video

Apply now for Mentor-Connect

Mentor-Connect matches groups that want to write NSF ATE grants with colleagues experienced in the writing process.   This partnership makes the grant application process more effective and fulfilling.

Applications for Mentor-Connect are being accepted now through October 12, 2016.

Read all instructions via "Get a Mentor" before you apply.

Thinking ahead to next summer!

Maybe you are already dreaming about next summer and the fun to be had in the (hopefully) warm month of June.  One fun and educational event that could be on your calendar is the Biosciences Industry Fellowship Program (BIFP).  We don't have all the specifics yet but the fellowship will run for 4 weeks in June, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  Fellows will visit NC Biosciences industrial facilities, community colleges and university labs and research parks.  Afterwards, they write about their experiences and produce conceptualized modules as grant products.  Applications are accepted on a first come first served basis so take a look and see if it might be right for you!
