Welcome to Bio-Link On-line News!

Why is summer such a busy time?

This summer has seen a whirlwind of workshops and conferences where community members have gathered to discuss new ideas and make plans for new innovations.  Bio-Link members are continually coming up with new ways to help students make it through college and find paths into the life science industry.

Even if you haven't been able to attend a conference or workshop, you can still benefit from these activities by viewing the slide presentations and notes on the Bio-Link website and the videos posted by HI TEC.  We'll have more to say about those materials in the sections below.

Bio-Link News August 2013

Certificates, Degrees and Maps oh my!

Bio-Link faculty are an exceptionally creative group.  If there is a niche in the bioscience world, there seems to be a Bio-Link program ready to develop a certificate designed to fill it.

Bio-Link programs have developed 10 different two year degrees and 24 certificates.  The degree page has short summaries for each of these with links to descriptions.  The program data page shows a quick count of the programs that offer these degrees, along with links to tables showing all the programs that offer that degree.

At this point, you might be wondering how your program can add a description for a new degree or certificate to the site or edit the existing description. Never fear! We're here to help.

The Community College Consortium on Bioscience Credentials

Twelve colleges from the Bio-Link community have been collaborating to arrive at a consensus on the skills needed by entry-level biotechnicians.  The efforts thus far were discussed in this session at the HI TEC conference.

If you're interesting in participating, or simply want more information, take a look at the slides, draft proposal, and documents from this year's Summer Fellows Forum.

ATE@20 features two stories from Bio-Link

Ever wonder how teacher education programs become sustainable?

Some of the first articles in the new ATE@20 blog feature initiatives from Bio-Link programs. You can learn how the teacher education program from Austin Community College came to set the standard for the state of Texas and how the program became sustainable. We look forward to seeing lots of interesting stories in future ATE@20 articles on projects funded by the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technology Education (ATE) program.
