Welcome to the July 2016 edition of Bio-Link Community news!

It's been a busy year for the Bio-Link community.  Hopefully, you're having a great July and enjoying some of the summer.  We've added several new features to our web sites (Bio-Link.org and Biotech-Careers.org) that we hope you'll enjoy.  I'll be writing more about these in the coming year.

One feature we think you'll like is the interactive map page at Biotech-Careers.org.  Selecting "yes" under the "Hired a Bio-Link student" heading filters the map view to show the number of companies that have hired Bio-Link students, as either full-time employees or interns.  Clicking and drilling, eventually takes you to a description and link to the company web site.

Alternatively, you can click the "employers" link at the bottom of the map, click "yes" again, and you'll see a table of companies in each state that have hired Bio-Link students, highlighted by a DNA icon.

Where do these data come from?

You might wonder where we get these data about student hires.  Wonder no more.  We get it from you!

Every year, we ask those of you who teach in Bio-Link programs to update the page with your program information.  Part of that process involves entering the names of companies or research institutions that have hired your students.  We aggregate that information to create the Biotech Employer report.  One of us (Dr. Todd Smith) wrote a script to add that information to the Biotech-Careers.org database.  You may notice that some employers are missing.  We are working on adding research institutions to the database and will be updating this over the year.

You can expect to hear from us this summer and early fall as we write and ask Bio-Link faculty to review their program page (one per college) and update information.

Help us put your success stories on the map!

HI TEC registration closes July 11th!

The 2016 High Impact Technology Exchange Conference (HI TEC) is a national conference on advanced technological education where secondary and postsecondary educators, counselors, industry professionals, trade organizations, and technicians can update their knowledge and skills.  Both the national Bio-Link center and the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center will have booths at the conference, so be sure to stop by!

The event will be held in Pittsburgh July 25-28 and Bio-Link members can register for the HI TEC conference at a reduced rate.  Highlights from the conference are described in our blog.

Contact Dr. Elaine Johnson [E
Johnson@biolink.ucsf.edu] for a HI TEC registration code.

Congratulations Delgado Community College!

Our congratulations go to Delgado Community College (New Orleans), a Bio-Link member, for their new ATE grant. This grant started this month and will help the college further enhance its Science Laboratory Technology program.  To learn more click here.

A New Four Year Biomanufacturing Degree program is approved–the first of its kind on California

Congratulations to MiraCosta College for earning approval of a new four year Biomanufacturing degree.  MiraCosta will be the first community college in California to offer a bachelor's degree.  The program seeks to fill the need for top-notch science workers in the San Diego area.  Way to go MiraCosta!

Writing an NSF grant is easier with a mentor.

Mentor-Connect helps colleges learn how to prepare grant proposals for the National Science Foundation's Advanced Technology Education Program.

If you're writing a grant this summer, be sure to take advantage of Mentor Connects' series of webinars.  Learn about financial management, preparing a budget and justification, project evaluation, and how to prepare all the various forms.  These webinars were recorded during the past year and can be viewed on-line.

To access the webinars and get the tutorials and slides, visit Mentor-Connect.org and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Save the Date, April 7-8, CSO Summit in 2017!

In 2012 Bio-Link held a summit on new innovations in providing student work experience.  The CXO summit took place at St. Louis Community College, Florissant-Valley, in St. Louis, Missouri.  Participants described their models and discussed the role of community colleges in stimulating economic development and providing students with workforce experience.  (Read about the summit and download the report).

Next spring, the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center will be revisiting the workforce training experience with a follow-up summit on community-college run incubators and contract organizations.  This summit will take place at Bluegrass Community and Technical College, April 7-8th, 2017, in Lexington Kentucky.  Learn more about the AC2 Bio-Link Regional Center's work to build a community of college-run CSO's and incubators in the AC2 CSO community area.  Sign up to get updates for this exciting event at the CSO Summit event page at AC2.Bio-Link.org.

Spotlight on a Bio-Link resource

A good place to start your summer reading is our Publications page, where you can find great information on all things biotech and more. Scroll to the bottom of the Bio-Link.org home page and look under the "Resources" menu to find the link to "Publications."  On the publications page, you'll find links to download all the publications that Bio-Link has helped create over the past years.

Sit back and enjoy!
