Welcome from Mr Hildrew

Happy New Year! I’m delighted to have joined the Academy as Headteacher, and I’ve been hugely impressed by the warm welcome, hard work, dedication and commitment shown by the students and staff in this first week.

One of my first projects as Headteacher is to review home-school communication. With this in mind we are re-developing our newsletter; I hope you like the new look! We’re also redesigning our website and looking at how we use social media to communicate. Much more on this to follow – watch this space!

Meet the Headteacher Evenings

All families should have received an invitation to my “Meet the Headteacher” evenings which start next week. I am holding these events to introduce myself to you in person, so you can find out a bit more about me, what I stand for and my plans for the Academy going forward. I am also very interested to hear the views of families about the current strengths and areas for development for the Academy, and ideas about our future priorities. The evenings take place as follows:
  • Wednesday 13th January: Hanover
  • Thursday 14th January: Stuart
  • Wednesday 20th January: Tudor
  • Thursday 21st January: Windsor
  • Sixth Form parents - any of the above evenings (please let us know which one!)
Each meeting will begin at 6pm in the Hall. There will be a presentation from me of about half an hour, followed by an opportunity to feedback your views and for more informal discussions to take place. Please reply to the email invitation if you are planning to attend, so we have an idea of numbers. If you wish to attend a different evening to the one allocated to your House, please let us know. I look forward to meeting you.

Tuesday 12th January 2016, 6pm – 8pm

A reminder that our annual Careers Convention takes place on Tuesday evening.  With over 40 stands there will be representatives from business, retail, charities, the Army and Police, Bristol City Football Community Trust, Premier Inn, universities, colleges and apprenticeship providers attending. There will be demonstrations, relevant careers information and people to talk to. This has always been a very useful event at which students and parents have had the opportunity to gain information about a range of potential careers. We do encourage you to attend.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Certificates
Many thanks to Mrs MacDonald for organising the raffle in aid of The Duke of Edinburgh award here at Churchill; £250 was raised which will go towards expedition kit to ensure that all students have access to the Award in future and can borrow equipment if needed. Last year was our best ever for Award completion rates with 90 completed at this point; participation remains very popular with about 160 students currently involved.  Well done and thank you to everyone involved in contributing to the achievements of these students including parent taxis and volunteering staff.  Many students now have nationally recognised certificates, badges and rewarding memories to show for their efforts and life experiences through the award sections.  Please continue to finish off your awards if you haven't completed them yet.  Too many students to list here but please click here to find out who they are!  Well done everybody, very well deserved.

Barcelona Trip - Activities Week
Year 8 & 9 Students

11th – 15th July 2016

This has always been a popular trip for students by giving them the opportunity to practice Spanish in its natural surroundings. The trip will include sightseeing in Barcelona as well as two days at Port Aventura/Costa Caribe, a theme park in Tarragona.

Accommodation will be in a beach resort in the Costa Brava on a full board basis (all meals are included except for the inflight meals). The students will travel from either Bristol or Gatwick Airport to either Barcelona or Tarragona Airport (to be confirmed). Coach travel will be provided from School and is included in the price. The total cost of the trip will be around £670, based on 25 students travelling, and is open to all students in Years 8 and 9. If we are unable to fill the spaces then we will open entry to Year 7 students. To secure your place, please collect a letter from Miss Collins at reception and return the slip to her as soon as possible, you will need to pay a non-returnable deposit of £100 through Parent Pay no later than Tuesday, 12th January. If you require a pay point letter, or have any questions regarding payment, please contact the Finance Office. Students coming on this trip should be good swimmers as we will be going to the beach, an aquatic park, and the hotel has a swimming pool. Students MUST own a passport which will not expire before one day after the return date.

Information & Reminders
  • Cashless Catering: This will be going live on Monday 11th January.  We have registered over 600 students for biometric access, the remaining students will be issued cards but can be registered onto biometrics by the Catering department at a later date, once opt in forms have been received. Please be aware that lost cards will incur a charge of £2.50 and will be issued by the Catering department. 
    There will be no cash option for students to purchase food from Monday.  School lunch accounts can be topped up by the following methods: Parent Pay or Cash loading machines – students can top up their lunch accounts via these machines either via biometric or lunch card option. There are two machines on site.
  • Car parking safety:  There have been a number of incidents recently relating to inappropriate parking of vehicles at the beginning and end of the Academy day when students are being brought in and being collected.  Please can we remind parents of the risks associated with vehicle movement when there are a significant number of students and staff also having to share the same space.  Please can you ensure that you do not double park or wait on the zig zag yellow lines so that we can minimise the risk of any further incidents occurring. 
  • Lost property: We currently have a large amount of lost property. If your child has lost anything please send them to Lost Property which is open on a Monday (1.10pm - 1.30pm) in Stuart House, Modern Foreign Languages Well cupboard.
  • Year 12 Geography Residential: Snowdonia 29th February- 4th March: Your son/daughter will shortly be bringing a letter home regarding our trip to Snowdonia. Kit lists, timings and other information are included. Please ensure that you read this carefully and return the essential information forms to Mrs Cadman in the Main School Office as soon as possible. If you have any further queries please contact Mrs Amer.
