Advanced Planted Tank

Rotala Wallichii

Difficulty: A difficult plant that requires a lot of care. This plant requires a hi-tech setup. Special attention is needed when adding fish to the aquarium due to many fish finding this plant a tasty snack.

Tank Position: Best placed at the rear of the aquarium. It is often seen placed upon raised areas of a hardscape to achieve more light. Can be grown in groups.

Lighting: This plant requires a lot of light. To achieve the stunning red/brown leaves high lighting is essential.

Temperature: A temperature range of 18-28℃ is best.

CO2 Requirements: To achieve brown/red colourings it is essential to provide high levels of CO2

Feeding: Due to the need for high levels of CO2 and lighting, its essential to balance this with a quality liquid fertiliser.

Note: An Absolutely gorgeous plant when grown correctly. Used in many contest winning aquascapes across the world.

Liven up your aquascape with the perfect livestock

Choosing what livestock to add to your aquascaped aquarium can be just as important as selecting the plants themselves. This week we raised the topic of fish choice and gave some important elements that must be considered when stocking your newly planted aquarium.

Tetra fish are a solid choice for many aquasqapers due to the wide selection of shapes and colours easily available to us. Small tetra fish don't just look good, they produce less waste, tend not to eat plants and are never going to disrupt plants roots or cause any issues with your aquascape.

When choosing livestock, fish or shrimps, besides to pick a colour that compliments your plants. Remembering that some plants leaves will change colour with the addition of CO2 and high powered lights so keep that in mind.

Take your time in selecting the perfect inhabitant for your planted tank. After all, when your sitting admiring your work, these little animals will be swimming/crawling all over it.

For the larger planted aquariums, the ultimate tank mate has to be angelfish or discus. Both these fish enjoy the low pH water that is associated with planted tanks and their graceful swimming can be mesmerising at times.
