|A note from the Editor
Professor Christian Lampl, MD
Dear Member of the European Headache Federation!
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the first edition of the EHF-News for which I have acted as editor. Firstly thanks are due to my predecessor Fabio Antonaci. Over the past 7 years he has done a fantastic job, shaping the EHF-News to ensure it has maintained its place as an informative newsletter addressing important information within the EHF.
He has acted always with the utmost academic integrity, which combined with his breadth and depth of understanding what is important to know within and about EHF. Given the secure footing of the newsletter I do not propose any immediate changes under my leadership. The paper newsletter will continue to bring important and beneficial information to its readers, so that the newsletter remains popular amongst readers. However, the use of electronic media is now a vital component of dissemination, providing a vehicle of wider distribution. I am fortunate to be supported by the EHF Administrative Office, which has been highly professional in the role as co-editor and played a major role in successfully finalizing the newsletter.
You are most welcome to contact me with your feedbacks, comments and proposals – so that we can make “EHF-News” into an essential global newsletter for people how are interested in the EHF and headache world where active experts can and should make a difference!

This year’s EHMTIC 2014, the 4th European Headache and Migraine Trust International Congress will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark, 18-21 September 2014.
EHMTIC is the premier international event for neurologists, physicians, scientists, researchers, international experts, and healthcare professionals with an interest in migraine and headache disorders. To view the EHMTIC Preliminary Scientific Timetable, please click here.
The four day programme continues to build on its basic and clinical science content by covering the latest available research, therapies, and developments from internationally recognised leaders in the field. The aim of this congress is to provide a better understanding of migraine, tension-type headache, trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias and other headache disorders as well as trigeminal pain worldwide and to give participants the opportunity to gather new scientific evidence and understanding for improving diagnosis and treatment for patients.
Poster presentations are a key feature of EHMTIC 2014 and the programme has been planned to allow ample time for poster viewing and chaired discussions with an emphasis on interaction across all sessions. We will feature the best of our developing researchers in the New Scientist lectures, an opportunity to hear what is happening at the absolute cutting edge.
Three Teaching Courses are scheduled prior to the start of the main programme and offer focused updates for primary care practitioners and others with special interest in the field of headache; an educational case-based interactive session aimed at clinical staff to update their knowledge and learn about new therapies; and a course aimed at trainees interested in novel techniques and developments in migraine research.
European Pain Federation EFIC and European Headache Federation EHF: The first two years of a fruitful cooperation - Hans G. Kress
In 2012, during my term as President of the European Pain Federation EFIC, Professor Paolo Martelletti from the European Headache Federation EHF and I developed the idea, and thereafter easily convinced the Boards of the two Federations to enter a promising cooperation.
For those, who are not so familiar with EFIC: The European Pain Federation EFIC® is a multidisciplinary professional organization in the field of pain research and medicine, registered in Belgium, where the EFIC Headquarters Office can be found in Diegem, a suburb of Brussels. Started off in 1993, the European Pain Federation EFIC® has become an European trademark in supporting professional education and pain research, for promoting pain medicine, fighting for the recognition of chronic pain as a disease in its own right, and calling on adequate pain relief to be considered a fundamental human right. EFIC® has developed into Europe´s most important multidisciplinary and multi-professional organization in pain medicine, and has become the European voice of scientists and healthcare providers in the field.
Representing 36 constituent national Pain Societies with over 20.000 members, EFIC® now proudly looks back at 20 yearsof continuous growth and service to our member pain societies. EFIC’s aims are to advance research, education, clinical management and professional practice related to pain, and to serve as an authoritative, scientifically based resource concerning policy issues related to pain and its management. The biennial EFIC “Pain in Europe” Congresses have become flagship scientific events in Europe attracting over 4,000 participants. Congress participants – although mainly from Europe - come from over 75 countries worldwide, and the Congress can be considered a major international meeting on pain issues including orofacial pain and headaches.
Looking back at two decades now, EHF and EFIC® are of same age, and though still young, they have meanwhile become mature and flourishing federations. The collaboration of the two federations was an important step and has immediately resulted in joint activities and initiatives, such as the participation of representatives of the two federations in the programs and in joint Topical Sessions of their respective international congresses, the installation of a new EFIC Taskforce on Headache chaired by Prof. Paolo Martelletti, and the EFIC® support of the Lifting-the-Burden (LTB) global campaign against headache. EFIC® has also endorsed the International Enrico Greppi Award of the Italian Society for the Study of Headache (SISC) for the best unpublished paper on headache. A member of the EFIC® Executive Board is an ex officio member of the jury, and the Enrico Greppi Award winner 2012 was awarded for the first time during the Opening Ceremony of the EFIC 2013 Pain in
This awarding event and the new EFIC® Taskforce on Headache are welcome results of the ongoing collaboration of EFIC® with the European Headache Federation (EHF), the Lifting-the-Burden (LTP) global campaign against headache, and the Italian Society for the Study of Headaches (SISC). During the forthcoming international EHMTIC Congress (a congress collaboration between European Headache Federation and Migraine trust) in Copenhagen, September 2014, the Organizing Committee has now managed to arrange an additional specific pain/headache session on Saturday, September 20, 2014 in acknowledgement for the great collaboration between EHF and EFIC and to follow up on the successful session during the last EFIC Pain in Europe Congress in Florence, 2013.
EFIC® very much welcomes this development and the idea of joining forces to create an increased awareness of headache, and also thinks about future joint activities and shared projects with EHF, e.g. on practice guidelines for best headache treatment.

The European Headache Federation “Headache School” for neurologists and general practitioners in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia
10 years after the first headache school in 2004, when EHF started their activities in the Republic of Georgia, the EHF again came back to Tbilisi to spread the experience and knowledge about headache to the regions of the country, as well as to present the results of their work since 2004. Lots of positive and remarkable improvements are to be mentioned since then: a) Epidemiological studies including willingness to pay for a headache service in different regions in Georgia has been published; b) 2 years after the first headache school in Georgia 2 headache clinics were established with the support from Lifting the Burden (LTB), meanwhile there are 5 headache clinics, mainly in the capital Tbilisi; c) pharmaceutical companies, such as Actavis and 1A Pharma were convinced to introduce sumatriptan to the Georgian market for 1 Euro per tablet. The establishment of these headache clinics and affordable sumatriptan as well as main preventative medications basically changed the landscape in the country.
Excellent speakers from 8 different countries from Europe (among 2 Georgian neurologists are working in Europe) covered different aspects of pathophysiology, treatment, headache care and epidemiology. The conference was well attended by 80 participants from all regions of the Georgia and the evaluation feedback was very positive. The Georgian Headache Society recruited about 20 new members during the congress.
Please note that other speakers are Georgian neurologists, the majority of whom were trained in Essen during the last 10 years and who went back to work in the headache clinics in the Country. This fact is perhaps the most important success of our work.

Next steps that are planned from the Georgean Headache Society:
The regional conference in the City of Kutaisi in Western Georgia in October 2014
The regional conference in the city of Batumi at the Black Sea coast in Fall 2015
The EHF would like to thank the Georgian Headache Society for their warm hospitality and friendship and wishes a fruitful future, for a better care of their patients.
