It was built on solid evidence of what worked best and supported strongly by the IMF, the World Bank, UNICEF, leading pharmaceutical companies and international health NGOs. Progress has been mixed and the early passion and cohesion of the coalition has dissipated.

A proposal to regulate the use of e-cigarettes in public parts of the city dissipated Tuesday night amid concerns there was too little medical information about them. The City Council voted 3-2 to snuff out an ordinance that would have limited e-cig use in public places, just as tobacco is prohibited in certain public places.

Contrary to the perception of cigarettes as a stress reliever, smokers are 70 percent more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression overall compared with non-smokers, according to a new British study. British American Tobacco (BATS.L), the world's second-biggest tobacco company, reported slightly better than expected sales for 2014, gaining share in a market shrinking as more smokers stub out the habit. The company, with operations in over 200 countries, was hit hard by the strong British pound and said that impact would continue this year, especially as some currency hedges expire.

Medical marijuana may soon be available to Orthodox Jews in New York State. The Orthodox Union, which provides kosher certification, is in discussion with companies offering kosher medical marijuana products, reports the Jewish Daily Forward.
