Why China Can't Quit Tobacco

After my first trip through China, I returned to Seoul with two tins of golden Yunnan tobacco, a present for one of the instructors at the university where I taught. He was a raw-boned, red-blooded American who smoked heavily and had heard good things about Chinese varieties. He was not disappointed. Not being a smoker myself, I’d done research to make sure I brought back something sapid. I read about Yunnan’s award-winning flue-cured tobacco, the only method that produces tobacco high in sugar, taught myself to judge quality, and read up on the history of tobacco in China.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage has slated the Welsh Government’s plans to restrict the use of e-cigarettes as “absolutely mad”. The Welsh Government wanted to ban the use of vapers in enclosed public places by the end of 2016. Now, as Health Minister Mark Drakeford looks set to water down the plans, the UKIP leader has slated any moves to restrict vaping in Wales.

Tobacco giant Reynolds American (NYSE:RAI) continues to look to a future beyond just cigarettes and announced it's created a separate division called RAI Innovations that's tasked with developing next-generation vapor and tobacco products. Cigarette usage remains in decline. Although industry data suggests Reynolds enjoyed a 4% increase in sales in December, fueled in part by a 5% increase from its Newport menthol brand it acquired when it bought Lorillard, the vast bulk of the increase was the result of price increases it instituted in November.


Alcohol in e-cigs can affect motor skills, Yale study shows

Some commercially available e-cigarettes contain enough alcohol to impact motor skills, [...] study shows. E-cigarettes deliver nicotine by vaporizing liquids, which often contain alcohol and other chemicals in addition to nicotine. As the dangers of cigarette smoking become more commonly known, people are turning to alternatives to get their nicotine kick. Hookahs, in particular, have become popular as an alternative, for many assume they are a healthier way to smoke tobacco. But, scientists caution that hookah smokers are actually inhaling a large potentially dangerous quantity of toxins.
