The tobacco companies are no longer blowing smoke about the hazards of combusted-tobacco cigarettes. But the critics of electronic cigarettes — an important new technology that has the potential to replace smoking worldwide – have begun mass-producing doubt about the product.


Now a study led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) [...] showing that, in rat models, nicotine exposure actually promotes alcohol dependence. "It's a vicious cycle," said TSRI biologist Oliver George, a senior author of the new study. "Nicotine makes individuals crave alcohol to 'reward' the brain and reduce stress.".


The vapour from e-cigarettes contains the same amount of nicotine as that from ordinary cigarettes, posing a serious health risk to those who inhale it passively, a new study from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has revealed. A group of tobacco companies sued the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday over recent guidance they say violates their free-speech rights by mandating pre-approval of labeling changes. Plaintiffs [...] filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to try to block the directive, which was issued in March.


A distributor of a number of well-known tobacco brands says the Government cannot unilaterally introduce plain packaging on its products as a member of the EU. JTI Ireland Ltd says this would be contrary to EU harmonisation objectives and an obstacle to trade between member states. JTI also claims the rules, due to come in next month, will distort and impair the dynamics of competition in the tobacco market.
