Coalition rebels' move to overturn prescription-only e-cigarettes policy hits a wall

Liberal senator Sarah Henderson has combined with Labor and Centre Alliance to shut down an attempt by two Coalition rebels to upturn the government’s prescription-only policy on e-cigarettes. In a Senate inquiry report to be tabled on Friday, the cross-party majority rejected calls from Liberal Hollie Hughes and National Matt Canavan to allow vaping devices and fluid to be imported for personal use. The pair have been openly campaigning against the prescription-only model backed by the health minister, Greg Hunt, and Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Canada: Vape Association Sets Out to Dispel Vaping Myths

“The Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) is alarmed by the resurgence of articles inaccurately depicting vaping as being as harmful as smoking, as well as linking vaping to increased COVID-19 symptom severity. As both claims have long been disproven, it is concerning to see a sudden return of misinformation coming out of the United States,” read the opening paragraph of the release. The association referred to the fact that the UK’s Royal College of Physicians first concluded that vaping is at least 95 percent less harmful than smoking six years ago. [...]

Hahn said in a statement.

Flavors added to vaping devices damage the heart, vanilla custard the most toxic of all

While health officials and lawmakers continue trying to steer young people away from vaping, the wide variety of enticing flavors added to these products make that a tough task. Although most of the worry over vaping comes from the risk of addiction, lung damage, and threat of switching to conventional cigarettes, a new study finds the flavoring chemicals these products use may be just as harmful as anything else. Researchers from the University of South Florida Health say vaporized flavoring molecules are toxic to the heart and damage the organ’s ability to beat correctly.

FDA Extends Deadlines for New Graphic Cigarette Warnings

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), citing the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, issued a rule on March 17 requiring 11 new health warnings on cigarette packs, cartons and ads, consisting of text warning statements accompanied by graphic color images. This was the second such set of warnings, as the first set was overturned as unconstitutional by an appellate court, which sent them back to the FDA to create new compliant warnings. These new warnings would have been required by the FDA beginning June 18, 2021.

Vaping laws could be about to change, making it illegal to import nicotine fluid

According to the latest national drugs survey, more than half a million Australians are current vapers and 2.4 million people have tried it at some point. Later this month, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) will decide whether to make it illegal to import nicotine liquid for vaping without a doctor's prescription. It's a move that vapers say would completely change the way e-cigarette users access liquid nicotine and could push people back to smoking cigarettes instead.
