EC are a consumer product rather than a medicine and from this point of view, asking about their efficacy is like asking whether cars with better safety features have been effective in helping people to stop using cars which were less safe. They did, but only in a way any improved product replaces the inferior one.

The children of mothers who smoke and breastfeed are more likely to develop serious health problems as they grow up, scientists warned yesterday. Even a small period of exposure to nicotine in the first months of life raises the danger of illnesses such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, compared with those breastfed by non-smoking mothers.

It's hard to believe that every day, more than 2,800 kids under the age of 18 try smoking for the first time. Research tells us that lifetime smokers and users of other tobacco products typically start before they even graduate from high school. And a teen who starts smoking at such an early age is far more likely to develop a strong addiction that can overpower even the most well-intentioned attempts to quit.

Two of the world’s largest tobacco companies have suffered a fall in profits as the cost of closing factories and unfavourable currency exchange rates weighed on their full-year results. Japan Tobacco, which sells the Camel and Winston brands through its international arm, said on Thursday that group profits fell 12.2 per cent to Y395.7bn for the year to the end of December 2014.
