Trends in Electronic Cigarette Use and Conventional Smoking: Quantifying a Possible “Diversion” Effect among U.S. Adolescents

The impact of electronic cigarettes (ECs) on nicotine use is hotly debated: some fear that ECs are a “catalyst” to conventional smoking, while others argue they divert adolescents from the more harmful product. This study used simulation modeling to evaluate the plausibility of catalyst and diversion hypotheses against real‐world data.

5 tips to help quit smoking in 2021

Many smokers make a New Year's resolution to quit, so the American Lung Association offers advice to improve their chances of success. Smoking is a risk factor for severe COVID-19, so quitting is more important than ever, the association noted. But keep in mind: Switching to electronic cigarettes is not quitting, the lung association stressed. E-cigarettes are tobacco products that contain nicotine, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved any e-cigarette as a smoking cessation aid.

Morocco Announces Increase in Cigarettes Prices

Morocco announced further increase in the prices of cigarettes, starting January 1. The list shows major increases in popular brands, including Camel, Marlboro, and Winston. South Africa Appeal Against Tobacco Ruling Raises Ban Fears

South Africa’s government is appealing a court ruling that last year’s ban on the sale of tobacco products was unconstitutional, an indication that stricter measures to contain the coronavirus may be under consideration. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has filed papers with the Supreme Court of Appeal on a non-urgent basis, her spokesman said in a phone message on Tuesday. The move follows a toughening of lockdown restrictions last week to help ease a resurgence in Covid-19 infections, which have led to a sharp increase in hospitalizations and deaths.
