Ireland has become the first country in Europe and the second in the world to pass plain packaging laws for tobacco products. The Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014 requires the removal of all industry marketing from tobacco packaging. It has now passed all stages of the Oireachtas.


The number of Spaniards who said they started using cannabis in 2013 outnumbered those who said they took up smoking cigarettes, according to a government study released Tuesday. "The figures confirm the extension of the problematic pattern of consumption of this substance," the head of the government's National Drugs Plan, Francisco Babin, said in a statement.


The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday passed a bill banning the use of electronic cigarettes in all places where traditional tobacco smoking is now prohibited, [...] If signed into law by County Executive Isiah Leggett (D), who supports it, it would be the first such ban in the Washington area.


A survey on substance abuse in Taiwan has found that just over 1 percent of local residents aged 12 to 64 have used illicit drugs, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday. Tsai Wen-ying (蔡文瑛), a division chief at the FDA, said that based on the 1.29 percent rate, an estimated 230,000 Taiwanese have used illicit drugs.


While it may be true that vaping one full cartridge of e-liquid is approximately equivalent to smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes in terms of nicotine intake, it is certainly not true that vaping one cartridge of e-liquid is the same as smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes. 


The town of Kirkland is joining the growing movement to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes. The city’s council on Monday signalled its intent to ban the use of e-cigarettes in municipal buildings by approving a notice of motion to amend a bylaw making the practice subject to a fine. Over the past six months, there were a few incidents of people using e-cigarettes in the library.
