A series of “highly disturbing” fires caused by exploding e-cigarette chargers has prompted a nationwide safety alert. The Local Government Association, which represents the 49 fire and rescue authorities in England and Wales, are calling on e-cigarette manufacturers to display warnings on packaging after over 100 fires have been caused by the devices over the past two years.

Flavored cigars will no longer be sold in many Minneapolis stores starting in January. The City Council voted Friday to ban flavored tobacco products at convenience stores, according to the Star Tribune [...]. The federal government banned flavored cigarettes in 2009, but other tobacco products are still sold with fruit and candy flavors.

A complete smoking ban in all Austrian restaurants and other food providers has been passed by the national authorities. It will start on May 1st, 2018. Hotels and other accommodation services will have the option to provide strictly separated smoker rooms. Violations can lead to fines of up to 2000 Euros.

Children as young as six have admitted trying electronic cigarettes, a survey conducted by social welfare group Caritas has found, bringing calls for tighter regulation of the devices and a ban on sales to under-18s. "We now know that children can easily access e-cigarettes and parents just do not know what's going on - and the government is not regulating it," said Lam Wai-fan, a social work supervisor for Caritas.

An article just published in the journal Addictive Behaviors presented data from the 2014 Texas Youth Tobacco Survey. It reported that 14% of middle and high school students in Texas used electronic cigarettes in the past 30 days. The prevalence of past 30-day e-cigarette use among nonsmokers who had never used any type of tobacco product was 7.3%.
